Electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures are used to suppress surface wave (SW) propagation in printed antenna systems. Although there are several different types of EBG structures, not all of them can be utilized in flexible applications. As a promising flexible EBG structure, perforated high impedance surfaces (PHIS), which also behave as artificial magnetic conductors, were previously reported. However, due to the asymmetry of their geometry, they can suppress SW in only one direction. This paper reports a symmetrical PHIS, which suppresses surface waves in more than one direction. The geometry of the perforations and patches are optimized to overlap the reflection phase and SW suppression bands.

Numerical analysis, design and two port equivalent circuit models for split ring resonator arrays
Yaşar Örten, Pınar; Sayan, Gönül; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2010)
Split ring resonator (SRR) is a metamaterial structure which displays negative permeability values over a relatively small bandwidth around its magnetic resonance frequency. Unit SRR cells and arrays have been used in various novel applications including the design of miniaturized microwave devices and antennas. When the SRR arrays are combined with the arrays of conducting wires, left handed materials can be constructed with the unusual property of having negative valued effective refractive indices. In th...
Theoretical investigation and design of wideband dielectric resonator antennas
Yüksel, Yılmaz Çağrı; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2015)
The aim of this thesis is to utilize Dielectric Resonator Antennas (DRA) as array elements due to their advantages over other conventional antenna elements such as dipoles and microstrip patches. Depending on both the excitation mechanisms and the antenna shape, a Dielectric Resonator Antenna (DRA) provides its designer multiple independent degrees of freedom. In this thesis three antenna shapes, namely hemispherical, cylindrical and rectangular DRAs, are investigated. The cylindrical and the rectangular sh...
ASYMMETRICAL COUPLED TRANSMISSION-LINE MODELING OF GROUNDED FERRITE SLAB AND ELECTRONIC BEAM SCANNING BY A SLOT ANTENNA IN A FERRITE SLAB
AYDIN, O; HIZAL, A (1993-07-02)
Radiation characteristics of a slot antenna in a ground plane covered by a ferrite slab which is magnetized perpendicularly by a DC magnetic field are investigated. This structure has a beam steering feature controlled by a DC bias field. Fourier transformed field representations and asymmetric coupled transmission line modelling are used to analyze this strudure. Far fields are evaluated by the Method of Steepest Descents. Numerical results are obtained at frequencies between 18 and 35 GHz for different pa...
Nonlinear mode coupling and sheared flow in a rotating plasma
Uzun Kaymak, İlker Ümit; Choi, S.; Clary, M. R.; Ellis, R. F.; Hassam, A. B.; Teodorescu, C. (IOP Publishing, 2009-01-01)
Shear flow is expected to stabilize the broad spectrum of interchange modes in rotating plasmas. However, residual fluctuations may still persist. To investigate the presence of such fluctuations, sixteen magnetic pickup coils equally spaced on a crown have been mounted inside the vacuum vessel, at the edge of a rotating plasma in mirror configuration. A comprehensive analysis of the magnetic fluctuations shows that very low spatial mode numbers survive under the imposed shear flow. Nevertheless, temporal F...
Parameter estimation of multicomponent micro-doppler signals /
Yıldız, Hüseyin; Severcan, Mete; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
Vibrating and rotating parts on a radar target is known to generate frequency modulated echo signal which is called micro-Doppler signal. Micro-Doppler signals are commonly modeled as the sum of sinusoidally modulated signals and the parameters, such as amplitude, frequency, phase, of these modulations are useful in the identification of these targets. In this thesis, the parameters of micro-Doppler signals from helicopter targets are estimated for the classification of the helicopters. Time-frequency analy...
