Numerical Design of Testing Functions for the Magnetic-Field Integral Equation
Karaosmanoglu, Bariscan; Ergül, Özgür Salih (2016-04-15)
We present a novel numerical approach to design testing functions for the magnetic-field integral equation (MFIE). Enforcing the compatibility of matrix equations derived from MFIE and the electric-field integral equation (EFIE) for the same problem, testing weights for MFIE are determined on given templates of testing functions. The resulting MFIE systems produce more accurate results that the conventional MFIE implementations, without increasing the number of iterations and processing time. The design pro...
Numerical calculation of homogenized properties of piezoelectric composites
Kurt, Mustafa; Gürses, Ercan; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2022-11-25)
Piezoelectric materials are the materials we use in many parts of our lives without being aware. These materials can convert electrical energy into mechanical energy or vice versa. Although this ability renders piezoelectric ceramics very attractive materials for sensing and actuation applications, their use often remains limited, due to their weight and brittleness. As a result of these drawbacks, piezoelectric composites are developed, and they offer superior performance compared to monolithic piezoelectr...
Numerical calculation of rough turbulent boundary layer for incompressible fluids
Atay, Görkem; Bayer, Özgür; Çıray, Cahit; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2018)
In this thesis, a numerical code for calculating turbulent boundary layer parameters is developed. Two-dimensional turbulent flow over a rough flat plate with zero pressure gradient is numerically solved by using the integral method. Fluid mechanics formulations, such as momentum integral equation are coupled with the results of Nikuradse’s experiment. Throughout the calculation, turbulent boundary layer parameters, such as boundary layer thickness, displacement thickness, momentum thickness, local skin-fri...
Numerical modelling of spatio-temporal patterns in a DC-driven gas discharge-semiconductor system
Özden, Gözde; Rafatov, İsmail; Karasözen, Bülent; Department of Scientific Computing (2015)
In this thesis, numerical modelling of temporal and spatial pattern formation in the planar layered system, consisted of a DC driven planar gas discharge layer, coupled to high ohmic semiconductor layer, is carried out in 1D and 2D Cartesian geometry. Numerical model includes continuity equations for ions and electrons, the Poisson equation for the electric field, the energy balance equation for the background gas. The conditions correspond to a transition from the Townsend regime to the glow discharge. Cal...
Numerical investigation of flow control over an airfoil with synthetic jets and its optimization
Akçayöz, Eray; Tuncer, İsmail Hakkı; Department of Aerospace Engineering (2008)
In this work, an active flow control method is studied numerically by using a synthetic jet over a NACA 0015 airfoil. Unsteady, turbulent flows over the NACA 0015 airfoil are computed using a Navier-Stokes solver. The Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is employed in all computations. Unsteady flow solutions are computed in parallel using Parallel Virtual Machine library routines in a computer cluster. The synthetic jet is implemented to the flow solver as a boundary condition. Response Surface Methodology i...
