Early-middle Carnian radiolarian cherts within the Eymir Unit, Central Turkey: Constraints for the age of the Palaeotethyan Karakaya Complex
Sayıt, Kaan; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2011-08-10)
A chert-pelagic carbonate formation within the mass flow deposits of the Palaeotethyan Karakaya Complex (melange) in Ankara has yielded poorly preserved radiolaria. The critical fauna: Paronaella claviformis (Kozur and Mostler), Canoptum cucurbita (Sugiyama), Canoptum inornatum Tekin and Canoptum levis Tekin is the late Early Carnian to the early Middle Carnian in age, corresponding to "unnamed radiolarian Zone" and "Tetraporobrachia haeckeli Zone" and partly to Capnuchosphera Lowest-Occurrence Zone. This i...
Early Devonian ostracodes of Thuringian Ecotype from NW Anatolia (Turkey)
Dojen, C; Ozgul, N; Goncuoglu, Y; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2004-12-01)
The first report of silicified ostracodes of Thuringian Ecotype (sensu BECKER) from Early Devonian (Emsian) limestones of the Pelitli and Kartal formations in NW Anatolia (Yakacik area, Istanbul, Turkey) is presented. The poorly preserved faunas of only nine taxa indicate faunal relations of the Istanbul Terrane especially to Thuringia (Germany) and Morocco during the Emsian.
LATE CRETACEOUS BENTHIC FORAMINIFERAL PROLIFERATION ON THE ARABIAN PLATFORM - TAXONOMIC REMARKS ON THE GENUS ORBITOIDES-DORBIGNY 1848
OZCAN, E (Wiley, 1993-12-01)
In south-eastern Turkey, a transgressive phase with a rich benthic foraminiferal association followed the Late Cretaceous emplacement of nappes onto the passive northern margin of the Arabian Platform. At the base, this transgressive sequence is represented by coarse clastics and local carbonate intercalations of the Antak Formation and the overlying, shallow water friable sands and carbonate facies of the Besni Formation, which is characterized by a sudden proliferation of benthic foraminifera, rudists and...
Early Cambrian back-arc volcanism in the western Taurides, Turkey: implications for rifting along the northern Gondwanan margin
Gursu, S; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2005-09-01)
The Lower Cambrian (Tommotian) Gogebakan Formation in western Central Anatolia is made up of slightly metamorphosed continental to shallow marine elastic rocks with pillowed and massive spilitic lavas and dolerite dykes. Spilitic lavas, commonly amygdaloidal, are albite-and pyroxene-phyric with the metamorphic mineral paragenesis albite + calcite + sericite +/- epidote +/- tremolite +/- chlorite. Dolerite dykes mainly include plagioclase and pyroxene as primary minerals and tremolite epidote chlorite as low...
Late Cretaceous stratigraphy in the Mudurnu-Goynuk Basin (Turkey) and inferences on sea-level change in the Late Campanian to Early Maastrichtian
Wolfgring, Erik; Wagreich, Michael; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Liu Shasha, Liu Shasha; Boehm, Katharina (Geological Society of London, 2020-01-01)
Upper Cretaceous strata at Goynuk, northwestern Anatolia, Turkey, provide a geological record of the Campanian-Maastrichtian from the Sakarya Terrane along the active Neotethys margin. Shales and shaly marls with siliciclastic and volcaniclastic intercalations indicate a pelagic palaeoenvironment rich in planktonic and benthonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil assemblages. A composite record from the Campanian to the Maastrichtian records nannofossil standard zones UC15c (CC21) to UC20a (CC26) as we...
