Observations and analysis of magnetic fluctuations in the Maryland centrifugal experiment
Choi, S.; Guzdar, P. N.; Case, A.; Ellis, R.; Hassam, A. B.; Lunsford, R.; Teodorescu, C.; Uzun Kaymak, İlker Ümit (AIP Publishing, 2008)
Initial results from magnetic probes on the Maryland Centrifugal eXperiment (MCX) [R. F. Ellis , Phys. Plasmas 8, 2057 (2001)] provide details of the propagation and azimuthal mode structure of magnetic fluctuations in the edge region. Magnetic coils placed azimuthally along the edge measure changes in the axial magnetic field during the time history of the plasma discharge. The eight evenly spaced coils can resolve azimuthal modes up to m=3. The plasma rotates azimuthally in MCX due to an applied radial el...
Observations on earthquake resistance of traditional timber-framed houses in Turkey
Şahin Güçhan, Neriman (Elsevier BV, 2007-02-01)
The aim of this study is to establish the earthquake behaviour of traditional timber-framed houses in Turkey and their technical features to serve as a guide in their conservation. This paper first discusses the destructive effects of changing settlement patterns on the traditional building stock and explores earthquake damage on traditional Turkish buildings, analysing the 1894-İstanbul, 1970-Gediz and finally 1999-Kocaeli earthquakes. A short definition is then provided of timber-framed building methods i...
Investigation of light attenuation in Lake Eymir
Atiker, Selen; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Sanin, Selim; Department of Environmental Engineering (2012)
Light penetration and attenuation has significant impact on the water quality of lakes. Algal activity, which is important for the levels of several water quality parameters, is dependent on light penetration besides availability of nutrients. In this study, change in light penetration and attenuation in Lake Eymir was studied. The relationships of extinction coefficient (ke), and water quality parameters were investigated. The effect of ke on Chl-a over nutrients were investigated. The water quality parame...

Studies on photochemical vapor generation of selenium
Çetmeli , Melis; Ertaş, Gülay; Department of Chemistry (2019)
Selenium is a significant trace element for human health. Selenium can be essential or toxic for human body depending on its concentration. Within the scope of this thesis, photochemical vapor generation tungsten coil atomization technique has been studied for the determination of selenium. Volatile selenium compounds were generated by exposure of UV light of the solution containing selenium and acetic acid. To increase sensitivity of photochemical vapor generation system, the technique was combined with tu...
