Due to depleting metallic sulfides, metallic oxides are gaining importance as alternative sources of commodities such as lead and zinc. Flotation might be anticipated as a promising solution for the processing of metallic sulphides provided that detailed characterization work and investigation on fundamental aspects are conducted. In this work, mineralogical, chemical and thermal characterization of Kayseri-Develi Pb-Zn ore is done. Mineralogical work using polarized microscopy, showed that the major minerals in this particular ore are cerussite (PbCO3) and smithsonite (ZnCO3). Chemical analyses using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) revealed a Zn grade of 32.70 % and a Pb grade of 11.70 %. The thermal characteristics and behaviour of the ore were retained using Thermogravimetry/Differential Tthermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The TG/DTG profile of the ore revealed that the ore reaches the maximum extent of decomposition at 383.42 °C under inert conditions, corresponding to approximately 20 % weight loss. TG/DTG and DSC profiles demonstrate characteristic peak positions for weight loss and heat flow, respectively, occurring at almost identical temperature values. Further, the calcination reaction region identified in the TG/DTG profile was reflected by an endothermic heat flow region in the DSC profile of the ore.

Quick Discrimination of Heavy Metal Resistant Bacterial Populations Using Infrared Spectroscopy Coupled with Chemometrics
Gurbanov, Rafig; Ozek, Nihal Simsek; Gözen, Ayşe Gül; Severcan, Feride (2015-10-06)
Lead and cadmium are frequently encountered heavy metals in industrially polluted areas. Many heavy metal resistant bacterial strains have a high biosorption capacity and thus are good candidates for the removal of toxic metals from the environment. However, as of yet there is no accurate method for discrimination of highly adaptive bacterial strains among the populations present in a given habitat. In this study, we aimed to find distinguishing molecular features of lead and cadmium resistant bacteria usin...
Optimization of conditions of metallothermic reduction of rare earth preconcenrtrates
Yılmaz, Serkan; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2007)
Rare earth ferrosilicon alloy is an important additive for ferrous metallurgy. It is mainly used to control the detrimental effects of sulfur in steel and to modify graphite structures in cast iron. The aim of this study was to optimize the conditions for the production of rare earth ferrosilicon alloy by metallothermic reduction process using a preconcentrate prepared from a bastnasite type of ore present in the Beylikahır-Eskişehir region of Turkey. In this study, the rare earth preconcentrate was reduced...
Solvent extraction behaviour of scandium from lateritic nickel-cobalt ores using different organic reagents
Ferizoglu, Ece; Kaya, Serap; Topkaya, Yavuz Ali (2018-04-01)
Scandium is one of the most important and strategic metals that can be recovered as a by-product from lateritic nickel-cobalt ores. In this research, different extractants were investigated to extract scandium from sulphate medium by using solvent extraction method. Generally, the organic extractants are classified as acidic, neutral and basic reagents. Thus, the aim of the present study was to compare scandium extraction efficiencies of some acidic, neutral and basic organic reagents. For this reason, Ionq...
Formaldehyde Selectivity in Methanol Partial Oxidation on Silver: Effect of Reactive Oxygen Species, Surface Reconstruction, and Stability of Intermediates
Karatok, Mustafa; Şensoy, Mehmet Gökhan; Vovk, Evgeny I.; Toffoli, Hande; Toffoli, Daniele; Ozensoy, Emrah (2021-01-01)
Selective oxidation reactions on heterogeneous silver catalysts are essential for the mass production of numerous industrial commodity chemicals. However, the nature of active oxygen species in such reactions is still debated. To shed light on the role of different oxygen species, we studied the methanol oxidation reaction on Ag(111) single-crystal model catalyst surfaces containing two dissimilar types of oxygen (electrophilic, Oe and nucleophilic, On). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy elect...
Expression of the genes encoding important transport system proteins in silver resistant escherichia coli mutants
Uyanık, Gökçe; Gözen, Ayşe Gül; Department of Biotechnology (2019)
Heavy metals, such as silver (Ag), copper (Cu) or mercury (Hg), have been used as antimicrobial agents for quite some time in human history. Silver has inhibitory or lethal effects on a broad range of bacteria and fungi. Furthermore, heavy metals are useful against viruses. The applications of silver dealing with bacteria comprise industrial, agricultural, medical and healthcare areas. They were used as disinfectants in hospitals as well as in the treatment of several infectious diseases such as tuberculosi...
