We consider an extension of the economic lot-sizing problem. Besides producing new items there is an option of remanufacturing returned items to satisfy demand. We show that the problem is polynomially solvable in the case of a single production line and NP-hard in the case of dedicated production lines.

The political economy of development in a historical context : international and Turkish experiences
Baysoy, Emre; Bedirhanoğlu Toker, Pınar; Department of International Relations (2006)
The issue of development has generally been perceived as an economic and technical process with little or no relevance to political issues. In contrast to this general understanding, this study aims to underline that development is a complex and primarily a political process. In support of this argument, the study overviews historically the changing meanings as well as ideologies of development since the 19th century with a particular focus on the Turkish case. By doing so, it attempts to recall the idea of...
The Representation of the poor in islamic tv series: the case of "beşinci boyut"
Yücel, Yunus; Erdoğan, Necmi; Department of Media and Cultural Studies (2016)
The question of poverty which is a result of capitalism is one of the biggest problems in the world and Turkey; and one of the best ways in order to understand the relation between dominant Islamist ideology and capitalism is to search how dominant Islamist ideology sees the question of poverty. This thesis, tries to explore how the question of poverty is encoded and how the poor is represented in Beşinci Boyut which is one of the Islamic TV series. In order to show that the role of Islamist discourse in th...
Pro-rich Inflation and Optimal Income Taxation
Gürer, Eren; Weichenrieder, Alfons J. (2021-11-01)
We study the implications of an increase in the price of necessities, which disproportionally hurts the poor, for optimal income taxation. When the government is utilitarian and disutility from labor supply is linear, the optimal nominal taxes and transfers are unchanged as households supply more labor to secure their consumption expenditures. Quantitative analyses with convex disutility of labor supply reveal that, because of positive labor supply effects, keeping average tax rates constant suffices to opt...
The Possibility of financial crisis in Developing Countries under flexible exchange rate regimes : a multidimensional approach
Çolak, Mehmet Selman; Cömert, Hasan; Department of Economics (2012)
Many economists and politicians have blamed fixed exchange rate regimes for several crises taking place in developing countries after the 1980s. According to them, since the beginning of the 2000s, widespread implementation of flexible exchange rate regimes and high international reserves have prevented developing countries from experiencing similar catastrophic experiences. This interpretation seems to be misleading. We believe that even flexible exchange rate regimes with high international reserves do no...
Simulating the Turkish economy under informality
Öztürk, Özgen; Derin Güre, Pınar; Department of Economics (2014)
The existence of a large shadow economy is one of the most important problems of developing countries, since informality mitigates tax revenues of governments, causes inefficiency in the economy and disrupts the welfare of the society. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of the existence of a large informal sector on the macroeconomic variables and welfare of Turkey. The constructed model for this purpose is a two sector overlapping generations (OLG) model. As far as I know, this is the first st...
