INVESTIGATIONS ON ECOSYSTEM BASED FISHERIES MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR THE TURKISH SEAS
Gazihan, Ayşe; Salihoğlu, Barış ; Department of Oceanography (2017-4-19)
Rising societal and economic needs of the increasing human population together with the growing size of fishing fleets, developing technology in the fishing and globalization of fish food market exerted a significant pressure on the marine ecosystems within the last decades. These pressures resulted in irreversible changes on the marine ecosystem structures and, in turn, limited the socio-economic benefits obtained from marine ecosystems. Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management aims to achieve a sustainable ba...
THE DYNAMICS BEHIND REFUGEE AND ASYLUM POLICY MAKING IN TURKEY: MASS REFUGEE MOVEMENTS FROM BULGARIA AND IRAQ
Bozer, Gizem; Kale Lack, Başak; Department of International Relations (2022-9-19)
The study aims to analyse the factors that affected Motherland Party’s policy responses to the mass refugee flows that originated in Bulgaria and Iraq between 1988 and 1991. The research closely examines the parallels and discrepancies between the policy responses to the large-scale refugee flows from Bulgaria and Iraq, as well as the factors that led to these responses. The study uses a conceptual framework relating to the refugee response policies, which systematizes the analysis under border control, rec...
EMBODIED CARBON ASSESSMENT OF URBAN RAILWAY SYSTEMS IN TURKEY BASED ON MATERIAL QUANTIFICATION
Yüksel, Müge; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2021-12-13)
Due to global sustainability movements, environmental impact assessments are steadily accelerating in the Architecture – Engineering – Construction (AEC) sector. In order to achieve the 2030 and 2050 carbon targets, laws and regulations are published by governments and decision makers to reduce carbon emissions. Nowadays, transportation is the second-largest contributor to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union, including Turkey. As a developing country, Turkey strives to catch not onl...
DESIGN AND PROPOSITION OF TECHNOLOGY POLICIES TO DIFFUSE GREENHOUSE TECHNOLOGIES IN TURKEY: A CASE FOR SPEAKING PLANT APPROACH
Baykal, Serra; Aydınoğlu, Arsev Umur; Department of Science and Technology Policy Studies (2021-6)
Main purpose of this thesis is to explore closed cultivation environment as greenhouses under protected cultivation in Turkey, emphasizing advanced production methods in use, challenges of improving current operations and ways of diffusing advanced tools and equipment through policies. In order to specify needs and solutions towards diffusing greenhouse technologies, solutions compatible to Speaking Plant Approach are centered. Protected cultivation technologies are not diffused at the potential level in T...
NATURAL GAS INFRASTRUCTURE EXPANSIONS IN TURKEY: ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY AND A COST COMPARISON WITH PV INVESTMENTS
Mansız, Bilge; Akınoğlu, Bülent Gültekin; Kat, Bora; Department of Earth System Science (2021-8-03)
Turkey, from 1980s on, has greatly invested in urban usage of natural gas, which is mostly imported. Alongside urban usage, natural gas is now widely consumed for electricity generation and industry. Beginning with 2014, even remote towns are also started to be supplied with natural gas. While there are many environmental and societal advantages of natural gas consumption over coal and fuel-oil, it can be argued that natural gas supply of remote areas is mostly due to social or political concerns. Natural g...
