Characteristics of the weathering zones developed within the tuffs of the Midas monument

2001-01-01
The Midas monument, an impressive cult facade located in the southern part of the Eskiflehir provincein central Anatolia, Turkey, was made within tuffs (white and pink), which now have deterioration problems. Inthis study, the depth and characteristics of the weathering zones that have developed in the white and pink tuffshave been investigated through thin-section studies, X-ray powder diffractometry, methylene blue adsorption tests,major-element analyses, and some index parameters. It has been determined that the feldspar minerals aremechanically fractured due to weathering. The tuffs contain small amounts of clay minerals. An approximately 1-cm-thick silica-rich zone has developed under a lichen cover on the pink tuff. The chemical weathering of the tuffsproduces weathered zones, which are 4.5-cm-thick within the white tuff and 2.5-cm-thick within the pink tuff. The index properties of the tuffs are slightly affected within the first 2.5 cm.

Konya Alaeddin Camisi Yapım Evreleri Üzerine Düşünceler
Asutay Effenberger, Neslihan (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2006)
The Alaeddin Mosque, which is located on a hill in the middle of modern Konya, is one of the most problematical monuments of the Seljuk Anatolia. It has suffered from several restorations and almost lost of its original substance. Its irregular prayer hall shows the following parts (from east to west): a hypostyle hall, a central unit with a mihrap cupola and a western wing. An U-shaped courtyard, where two kümbets are situated, is positioned in the north side of the prayer hall. In addition, some wall frag...
The Neighbourhood Mosque with Wooden Minaret in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 16th and 17th Century: Four Examples of Restoration in Tuzla Region
Jahic, Edin (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2019-9-25)
The mosque with wooden minaret, porch and hip roof, represents the authentic building type which had been built on a large number through four centuries of the Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1463-1878). These structures were constructed using locally available materials and construction techniques, all done by domestic builders. Sometimes numerous, small neighbourhood (mahalle) mosques constantly decay and disappear in last hundred years, as a result of incompetent appraisal and maintenance, viol...
Durability assessment of some Cappadocian tuffs using factor analysis, multiple regression analysis, and analytical hierarchy process
Deniz, B. Ertas; Topal, Tamer (2022-01-01)
Tuff located in Central Anatolia (Cappadocia) has been used as a building stone in many historical monuments, churches, and mosques. Although some of the tuffs used in those historical structures show good performances, the others yield poor performances with their physical and mechanical properties varying in large ranges. This study aims to assess the durability of the tuffs using factor analysis (FA), multiple regression analysis (MRA), and analytical hierarchy process (AHP). In current study, thirteen t...
Seismic Assessment of Monastery of Stoudios (Imrahor Mosque) in Istanbul
Kucukdogan, Bilge; Kubin, Josef; Ünay, Ali İhsan (2010-10-08)
Monastery of Stoudios, dated back to the reign of Eastern Roman Empire, is known to be the oldest surviving -albeit partially- religious building in Istanbul. During sixteen centuries, the building has been exposed to several earthquakes, fires and other minor disasters which have caused considerable damages and partial destruction in some of its sections. As a part of a general master plan for the structural condition assessment of historical buildings and monuments of Istanbul, this study aims to evaluate...
