Effect of initial support of excavation on seismic performance of cut and cover structures
Rezaei, Hamidreza; Caner, Alp; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
Cut and cover construction is one of the fastest and cheapest methods for constructing rectangular shallow tunnels. Construction of cut and cover structure in soil usually starts with installation of the initial support of excavation system, which may consists of rigid type of initial supports such as tangent piles or secant piles. These systems usually remain in place after completion of the final structure. However, to simplify the design, it is a common practice to ignore the contribution of initial supp...
Effect of superstructure-abutment continuity on live load distribution in integral abutment bridge girders
Dicleli, Murat (2010-03-30)
In this study, the effect of superstructure-abutment continuity on the distribution of live load effects among the girders of integral abutment bridges (IABs) is investigated. For this purpose, two and three dimensional finite element models of several single-span, symmetrical integral abutment and simply supported (jointed) bridges (SSBs) are built and analyzed. In the analyses, the effect of various superstructure properties such as span length, number of design lanes, girder size and spacing as well as s...
Effect of peak ground velocity on deformation demands for SDOF systems
Akkar, S; Ozen, O (Wiley, 2005-11-10)
The effect of peak ground velocity (PGV) on single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) deformation demands and for certain ground-motion features is described by using a total of 60 soil site records with source-to-site distances less than 23 km and moment magnitudes between 5.5 and 7.6. The observations based on these records indicate that PGV correlates well with the earthquake magnitude and provides useful information about the ground-motion frequency content and strong-motion duration that can play a role on the s...
Effect of the number of stories and aspect ratio on the seismic performance of base-isolated buildings
Zerman , Oğuz; Dicleli, Murat; Department of Engineering Sciences (2021-2-5)
Despite the advanced engineering solutions, earthquakes remain to be one of the causes of casualties and property damage for humankind among natural disasters. To ensure that the essential services are not interrupted after an earthquake, it is crucial for some buildings to remain functional with minimal structural or non-structural damage. These buildings include administrative buildings, law enforcement buildings, fire stations, hospitals, and communication centers. Seismic base isolation systems are freq...
