Microparticles with complex structures canbe used for various areas such as drug delivery1, emulsionstabilization2, sensor applications, catalysis3 andseparation processes4. We report a new synthesis procedure whichinvolve the use of photolithography combined with liquid crystal templates.Specifically, mixtures of the reactive mesogen (RM257) and nonreactive liquidcrystal (E7) were polymerized using a UV light that was filtered with alithograpy mask. We used circular, triangular, rectangular, square shape, starshape and heart shape lithography masks to cover the shape library for thesynthesis of further macro-systems. The LC-monomer mixture was kept inside asandwich cell that allow manipulation of the alignment of the LCs within. Afterpolymerization, unreacted mesogens were extracted from polymeric microparticlesand allowed to shrink and maintain the final form of the microparticles. Weshowed that polymeric microparticles can be produced in 2D or 3D structures anddifferent sizes that range from 20 µm to 200 µm in length and 1.5 µm to 160 µmin thickness. We showed that theparticles of circular, elliptical, triangular, square, rectangular, star andheart shapes in 2D, and chiral particles in 3D can be synthesized.

Günbaş, İsmail Doğan; Hasırcı, Nesrin; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2007)
In recent years, biodegradable polymeric systems have gained importance for design of surgical devices, artificial organs, drug delivery systems with different routes of administration, carriers of immobilized enzymes and cells, biosensors, ocular inserts, and materials for orthopedic applications. Polysaccharide-based polymers represent a major class of biomaterials, which includes agarose, alginate, dextran, and chitosan. Chitosan has found many biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, owing...
Preparation of silica coated cobalt ferrite magnetic nanoparticles for the purification of histidine-tagged proteins
Aygar, Gulfem; Kaya, Murat; Özkan, Necati; Kocabıyık, Semra; Volkan, Mürvet (2015-12-01)
Surface modified cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles containing Ni-NTA affinity group were synthesized and used for the separation of histidine tag proteins from the complex matrices through the use of imidazole side chains of histidine molecules. Firstly, CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution were prepared in an aqueous solution using the controlled co-precipitation method. In order to obtain small CoFe2O4 agglomerates, oleic acid and sodium chloride were used as dispersants. The CoFe2O4...
INVESTIGATION OF THE PERMEABILITY OF THE CELL MEMBRANE FOR DIFFERENT CRYOPROTECTANT AGENTS IN A CONTINUOUS THERMO-FLUIDIC MICRO-CHANNEL SYSTEM
Hatiboğlu, Anıl; Külah, Haluk; Önel, Selis; Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (2021-9-13)
Modeling cell membrane permeability in different solutions is a critical requirement in controlling the response of cells during preconcentration processes in biotechnological applications, such as drug delivery, fluorescence imaging, and cryopreservation . Current multi-step methods employed in loading cells with high concentrations of cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) prior to cryopreservation for long term storage affect cell viability as a result of extended exposure times associated with these methods. One ...
Synthesis of anthracene-based macrocycle for detection of explosives
Yılmaz, Tuğçe; Özçubukçu, Salih; Department of Chemistry (2019)
Development of fluorescent sensors for detection of explosives become very interesting area for researchers. Picric acid is an important member of nitro-aromatic compounds which is also a powerful explosive. Fluorescent sensors are one of the essential way to detect picric acid, since they have many advantages, such as high sensitivity, simple instrumentation, and quick response. Cyclophanes are molecules that their cyclic structure makes them very promising candidate for molecular recognition. Anthracene-b...

Liposome surface modifications serve great potential applications of liposomes, for instance, increasing stability, bioactive liposome conjugates, and targeted drug, gene, and image agent delivery. In this study, novel targeted lipopolymers, peptide 18/peptide 563-poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline)-dioleoylphosphatidyl-ethanolamine (P18/P563-PEtOx-DOPE), have been demonstrated to be successfully synthesized. The structures of P18/P563-PEtOx-DOPE were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, GPC, and(1)H-NMR. In this strateg...
