This paper presents the design of a reconfigurable microstrip slot-coupled patch reflectarray using RF MEMS switches. The reflectarray is designed on two back-to-back bonded glass substrates front side of which contains the microstrip patch antenna elements and the backside contains the phase shifting elements. The phase shifting elements consist of microstrip lines the lengths of which are adjusted with MEMS switches resulting with adjustable phase characteristics of each antenna element. A transmission li...

Reconfigurable antennas using RF-MEMS research in Turkey
Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Demir, Şimşek; Akın, Tayfun (2011-06-10)
A review of the on-going research in Turkey, -in Middle East Technical University (METU)-, on tunable microwave components and reconfigurable antennas produced by RF MEMS technology is presented in this paper. As a key element of reconfigurable structures, several capacitive contact shunt RF MEMS switches are designed, fabricated and measured. Lifetime measurements show that these switches can operate more than 3.2 billion cycles with a bipolar actuation without any degradation in performance. Design and me...
Reconfigurable antenna structure for RFID system applications using varactor-loading technique
Sevinç, Yusuf; Kaya, Adnan (2012-01-01)
A novel method is presented for electrically tuning the frequency of a compact radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna. A tuning circuit, comprising a radio frequency (RF) switch and discrete passive components, was completely integrated into the antenna element, which is thus free of DC wires. The low-profile printed antennas were fabricated together with the layouts of the DC control circuits and other RF/baseband circuit footprints. A surface-mounted varactor was applied as a frequency-tuning e...
Reconfigurable Nested Ring-Split Ring Transmitarray Unit Cell Employing the Element Rotation Method by Microfluidics

A continuously tunable, circularly polarized X-band microfluidic transmitarray unit cell employing the element rotation method is designed and fabricated. The unit cell comprises a double layer nested ringsplit ring structure realized as microfluidic channels embedded in Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using soft lithography techniques. Conductive regions of the rings are formed by injecting a liquid metal (an alloy of Ga, In, and Sn), whereas the split region is air. Movement of the liquid metal together with ...
