A novel method is presented for electrically tuning the frequency of a compact radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna. A tuning circuit, comprising a radio frequency (RF) switch and discrete passive components, was completely integrated into the antenna element, which is thus free of DC wires. The low-profile printed antennas were fabricated together with the layouts of the DC control circuits and other RF/baseband circuit footprints. A surface-mounted varactor was applied as a frequency-tuning element at the proper places of the meandered slots in the compact antenna. Prototype designs showed that the in-band frequency (return, loss < 10 dB) was tunable from, 2.4 Gift to 2.8 GHz when the bias voltage varied from 4 V to 7 V. The impact of the tuning circuit on the antenna's return loss and radiation pattern were experimentally studied through comparison with the performance of a reference antenna not incorporating the tuning circuit. The proposed frequency tuning concept can be extended to more complex compact structures as well as other types of antennas to give enhanced electrical performance.

Design of a dual polarized low profile antenna for microwave brain imaging
Üçel, Kaan; Alatan, Lale; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2022-5-9)
In this thesis, a low profile, low cost, wide band (0.9-2GHz) dual linearly polarized printed dipole antenna is designed to be used in microwave brain imaging systems. Dual polarization feature offers superior data acquisition through polarization diversity for better image quality. Starting from a simple printed dipole, antenna structure is modified step by step to meet these design requirements. Since a conductive surface in close vicinity of the antenna affects antenna performance, in order to obtain uni...
Beam Steerable Traveling Wave Meander Line Antenna Using Varactor Diode for X-Band Applications
Gokalp, Nihan; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem (2008-07-11)
This paper presents a novel beam steerable meander line antenna with varactor diode for X-band applications. Beam steering has been achieved by loading the arms of the meander line antenna with varactor diodes. The capacitances of the varactor diodes have been controlled by DC bias voltage. Instead of varactor diodes, RF-MEMS variable capacitances can be used to scan the beam. Since the insertion loss of MEMS capacitances are small compared to loss of varactor diodes, use of MEMS capacitors will increase th...

In this study, a new practical method for fast fabrication of low-cost wearable antennas is introduced. The antennas are directly cut from woven conductive fabrics, while their terminals are connected to microchips by using a repair glue. Following simple trials to demonstrate the fabrication procedure, high-performance radio-frequency antennas that are suitable for the proposed method are designed in a simulation environment based on the multilevel fast multipole algorithm and genetic algorithms. Simulatio...
Reconfigurable CPW-FED dual-frequency rectangular slot antenna using RF MEMS technology
Erdil, Emre; Topalli, Kagan; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Akın, Tayfun (2005-07-08)
A reconfigurable dual-frequency rectangular slot antenna using MEMS technology is presented. In this structure, a rectangular slot antenna is integrated with MEMS cantilever type capacitors. Simulation results show that the structure has a dual frequency behavior where both of the resonant frequencies can be reconfigured dynamically. By the actuation of MEMS cantilevers, the lower resonant frequency shifts 1.2 GHz, whereas the higher resonant frequency has a shift of 330 MHz without any distortion of the ra...
Beam Switching Reflectarray Monolithically Integrated With RF MEMS Switches
Bayraktar, Omer; Aydın Çivi, Hatice Özlem; Akın, Tayfun (2012-02-01)
A reflectarray antenna monolithically integrated with 90 RF MEMS switches has been designed and fabricated to achieve switching of the main beam. Aperture coupled microstrip patch antenna (ACMPA) elements are used to form a 10 x 10 element reconfigurable reflectarray antenna operating at 26.5 GHz. The change in the progressive phase shift between the elements is obtained by adjusting the length of the open ended transmission lines in the elements with the RF MEMS switches. The reconfigurable reflectarray is...
