A Learning-based method for person re-identification
Oğul, Burçin Buket; Temizel, Alptekin; Department of Information Systems (2013)
Matching pedestrian images captured from different cameras is called person re-identification problem. The problem is challenging due to the low resolution of images, differences in illumination, the positional variance and possible appearance of carried objects, such as a bag, at different viewpoints. In this thesis, we investigate the discriminative ability of different features extracted from image in a binary classification framework. We finally propose a learning based method to combine different featu...
A Learning Progression for Elementary Students' Functional Thinking
Stephens, Ana C.; Fonger, Nicole; Strachota, Susanne; İşler Baykal, Işıl; Blanton, Maria; Knuth, Eric; Gardiner, Angela Murphy (Informa UK Limited, 2017-01-01)
In this article we advance characterizations of and supports for elementary students' progress in generalizing and representing functional relationships as part of a comprehensive approach to early algebra. Our learning progressions approach to early algebra research involves the coordination of a curricular framework and progression, an instructional sequence, written assessments, and levels of sophistication describing students' algebraic thinking. After detailing this approach, we focus on what we have l...
A Heuristic for Obtaining and Initial Solution for the Transportation Problem
Kirca, Ömer; Şatır, Ahmet (JSTOR, 1990-9)
A heuristic for obtaining an initial solution for the transportation problem is presented. Comparison of findings obtained by the new heuristic and Vogel's approximation method (VAM) are tabulated for 480 examples. Superior performance of the new heuristic over VAM is discussed in terms of total costs obtained, number of iterations required to reach the final solution, and CPU time required to solve the problems. Experimental design aspects are also presented.
A Research Methodology to Conduct Effective Research Syntheses
ÜSTÜN, ULAŞ; Eryılmaz, Ali (2014-01-01)
The need for comprehensive and systematic research syntheses has been increasing as the number of primary studies has proliferated in educational sciences in recent years. That is the main reason why diverse applications of meta-analysis, which is one of the most effective ways of research synthesis, has been encouraged in many disciplines including social and educational sciences. The main purpose of this article is to provide a conceptual framework for meta-analysis by questioning its criticisms and stren...
