Cadmium biosorption by Bacillus circulans strain EB1
Yilmaz, EI; Ensari, NY (2005-07-01)
A heavy metal resistant bacterium, Bacillus circulans strain EB1 showed a high cadmium biosorption capacity coupled with a high tolerance to this metal when grown in its presence. Bacillus circulans EB1 cells grown in the presence of 28.1 mg cadmium/l were capable of removing cadmium with a specific biosorption capacity of 5.8 mg Cd/g dry wt biomass in the first 8 h. When the cells were pre-conditioned with low concentrations of cadmium in pre-grown medium, the uptake was increased to 6.7 mg Cd/g dry wt bio...
Cadmium removal using clinoptilolite : influence of conditioning and regeneration
Gedik, Kadir; İmamoğlu, İpek; Department of Environmental Engineering (2006)
Clinoptilolite samples obtained from two deposits in Turkey were tested for their potential in removing cadmium from aqueous solutions. Preliminary experiments in batch mode revealed inferior cadmium uptake at low pH. Particle size was found to have no effect on cadmium removal efficiency suggesting the use of exchangeable cations found in the internal/available sites. Increasing temperature yielded positive, whereas prewashing had no effect on cadmium removal using both clinoptilolite samples. The Langmuir...

Cadmium inhibits mismatch repair by blocking the ATPase activity of the MSH2-MSH6 complex
Banerjee, Sreeparna (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2005-2-23)
Cadmium (Cd2(+)) is a known carcinogen that inactivates the DNA mismatch repair (MMR) pathway. In this study, we have tested the effect of Cd2+ exposure on the enzymatic activity of the mismatch binding complex MSH2-MSH6. Our results indicate that Cd2+ is highly inhibitory to the ATP binding and hydrolysis activities of MSH2-MSH6, and less inhibitory to its DNA mismatch binding activity. The inhibition of the ATPase activity appears to be dose and exposure time dependent. However, the inhibition of the ATPa...
Dihydroxylation of olefins catalyzed by zeolite-confined osmium(0) nanoclusters: an efficient and reusable method for the preparation of 1,2-cis-diols
Metin, Onder; Alp, Nurdan Alcan; Akbayrak, Serdar; Bicer, Abdullah; GÜLTEKİN, Mehmet Serdar; Özkar, Saim; Bozkaya, Ugur (2012-01-01)
Addressed herein is a novel, eco-friendly, recoverable, reusable and bottleable catalytic system developed for the dihydroxylation of various olefins yielding 1,2-cis-diols. In our protocol, zeolite-confined osmium (0) nanoclusters (zeolite-Os-0) are used as reusable catalyst and H2O2 served as a co-oxidant. Zeolite-Os-0 are found to be highly efficient and selective catalysts for the dihydroxylation of a wide range olefins in an aqueous acetone mixture at room temperature. In all of the olefins surveyed, t...
