Representation of urban form via drawings, maps and photographs is an integral part of the typomorphology studies. In these studies, researchers aiming to reveal the physical and spatial structure of cities face the challenge of representation of 3D spaces in various scales from territories to buildings on a 2D printed/digital paper. This challenge brings in a question of abstraction on what information to include and what not to, and it is directly related to the method of typomorphology. Despite its indispensable role in typomorphological research, the character and the transformation of visual content are yet to be analysed in a systematical manner. The Urban Morphology journal, published biannually since 1997, is one of the leading academic publications in the field. Currently, there are 173 articles published in the journal, the majority of which offer graphic content. This study aims to provide a critical reading of non-textual content in Urban Morphology Journal in order to answer following research questions:What kind/type of visuals accompany the textual content? Is it possible to identify a repertoire of drawing types for typo-morphology studies? How does this repertoire transform in time? Are there identifiable turns in the way researchers draw?Given that typo-morphology is an interdisciplinary field, is it possible to identify significant differences in the type of drawings that the researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds (i.e. architects, planners, geographers, historians, sociologists) use in their articles?Given that typo-morphology studies deal with urban form in different scales, how does the graphic content of the journal respond to the question of multi-scalarity?How the paratextual qualities of the journal affect the visual content?

Analysis of the limits of representation of architectural photographic images in periodicals
Bakht, Nazlı; Güzer, Celal Abdi; Department of Architecture (2007)
This study aims to analyze the limits of representation of architectural photographic images in periodicals within architectural media that shape today’s architectural production. This aim is accomplished in three sections; “examining the power of image in architecture”; “examining architectural media” and “examining the periodicals’ attitudes towards using architectural photography”. A case study is done to uncover the relationship between the photograph and the medium that it takes place on and determine ...

Authentication of space: the photograph as a raw material for architectural production
Koca, Aslı; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2009)
This thesis is a critical reconsideration of the relationship of architectural production with its unique mode of representation: “photography.” Photography has been interpreted essentially as a technique and a visual medium to document architecture in general. The “photograph,” in this sense, is regarded as a representational form of documentation and an artistic and material expression of architecture. Besides this conventional value, this study argues that photography not only provides a new medium for t...
Reading architectural space through a staged event
Temizer, Seda; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2003)
This study is an inquiry into the architectural aspects of أstage spaceؤ, which is believed to be the materialization of visual relationships, with the claim that it is also the best illustration of the proposition that architectural discourse is affected by the changes in visual culture. The study is based on the assumption that changes in the conceptualization of architectural space have also been influenced from the shifts in the field of vision, which are the consequences of the changes in the social, p...
Intersections: architecture and photography in Victorian Britain
Acar, Sibel; Enginsoy Ekinci, Ayşe Sevil; Department of History of Architecture (2009)
Architecture and photography have always been closely interacted since the invention of photography in the late 1830s.While architecture has been captured as one of the main subjects of photography, photography has served architecture as a valuable tool of representation. Focusing on the frame defined by Victorian Britain, this study tries to capture intersecting histories between photography and architecture. Accordingly three intersections were defined: the first intersection corresponds to the simultaneo...
