To ultimately avoid CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, the European research project “ECO-BASE” (Establishing CO2 enhanced Oil recovery Business Advantages in South Eastern Europe, 2017-2020) has identified a number of candidate CO2-EOR oil fields that could benefit economically from nearby industrial sources of CO2, whilst permanently sequestering the captured CO2 in the subsurface. On the near term, however, the objective of the ECO-BASE project was to raise sufficient interest among the emitters, oil field operators and national governments to develop a common understanding of the business opportunities and allow resources to be spent to further mature potential business cases along the various decision gates of their respective project maturation processes. To this end, two candidate oil fields have been investigated in-depth, i.e. the large Batı Raman heavy oil field in southeast Turkey, and the Brădești oil field in southwest Romania. Their business cases for CO2-EOR combined with permanent CO2 storage are discussed in this paper. It can be concluded that, in South Eastern Europe, CO2-EOR has the potential to justify economically first-of-a-kind CO2 infrastructure and sequestration projects that otherwise would not have been feasible.

Numerical investigations on flashback dynamics of premixed methane-hydrogen-air laminar flames

© 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLCInjecting hydrogen into the natural gas network to reduce CO2 emissions in the EU residential sector is considered a critical element of the zero CO2 emissions target for 2050. Burning natural gas and hydrogen mixtures has potential risks, the main one being the flame flashback phenomenon that could occur in home appliances using premixed laminar burners. In the present study, two-dimensional transient computations of laminar CH4 + air and CH4 + H2 + air flames are per...
Sorption enhanced ethanol reforming over cobalt, nickel incorporated mcm-41 for hydrogen production
Gündüz, Seval; Doğu, Timur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2011)
The interest in hydrogen as a clean energy source has increased due to depletion of limited fossil resources and environmental impact related to CO2 emissions. Hydrogen production from bio-ethanol, which already contains large amount of water, by steam reforming reaction, has shown excellent potential with CO2 neutrality. However, steam reforming of ethanol reaction is a highly complex process including many side reactions which decrease hydrogen yield and have a negative effect on process economy. Also, th...
CO2 injection in carbonates
Izgec, O.; Demiral, B.; Bertin, H.; Akın, Serhat (2005-07-28)
Started as an EOR technique to produce oil, injection of carbon dioxide which is essentially a greenhouse gas is becoming more and more important. Although there are a number of mathematical modeling studies, experimental studies are limited and most studies focus on injection into sandstone reservoirs as opposed to carbonate ones. This study presents the results of computerized tomography (CT) monitored laboratory experiments to characterize relevant chemical reactions associated with injection and storage...
Sustainability Assessments of Urban Railway Systems: Case Study Evaluations in Turkey
YÜKSEL, MÜGE; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Pekeriçli, Mehmet Koray (Springer, 2019-01-01)
There are ongoing efforts to control global warming via reducing CO2 emissions, which are mostly based on human activities. Through life cycle assessment (LCA) carbon footprint (CFP) calculations provide a clear picture of embodied carbon (EC). In this study, the significance of EC estimation and reduction for railway projects are explored. The main motivation is having applicable sustainability strategies for railway systems in Turkey. Since there is no certification system, range or database, these effort...
