© 2022 Hydrogen Energy Publications LLCInjecting hydrogen into the natural gas network to reduce CO2 emissions in the EU residential sector is considered a critical element of the zero CO2 emissions target for 2050. Burning natural gas and hydrogen mixtures has potential risks, the main one being the flame flashback phenomenon that could occur in home appliances using premixed laminar burners. In the present study, two-dimensional transient computations of laminar CH4 + air and CH4 + H2 + air flames are performed with the open-source CFD code OpenFOAM. A finite rate chemistry based solver is used to compute reaction rates and the laminar reacting flow. Starting from a flame stabilized at the rim of a cylindrical tube burner, the inlet bulk velocity of the premixture is gradually reduced to observe flashback. The results of the present work concern the effects of wall temperature and hydrogen addition on the flashback propensity of laminar premixed methane-hydrogen-air flames. Complete sequences of flame dynamics with gradual increases of premixture velocity are investigated. At the flame flashback velocities, strong oscillations at the flame leading edge emerge, causing broken flame symmetry and finally flame flashback. The numerical results reveal that flashback tendency increase with increasing wall temperature and hydrogen addition rate.

Global interest in hydrogen as an energy carrier for combustion and fuel cell applications to reduce CO2 emissions is expanding. However, the use of 100% hydrogen in combustion applications is still technologically and logistically immature, necessitating substantial adjustments to infrastructures linked to hydrogen generation, transfer, and conversion. Thus, blending hydrogen is considered as a preliminary approach on this transition. This work investigates laminar flame propagation of natural gas - air an...
Optimum daily operation of a wind-hydro hybrid system
Ercan, Eray; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin (2022-06-01)
© 2022 Elsevier LtdDue to the negative effects of fossil fuels on the environment and health, energy supply is shifting towards renewables. The integration of renewable energy systems is challenging due to the intermittent nature of renewables, however this can be mitigated through storage. Uncertainty in electricity prices in spot markets further complicates the operation of these systems. Pumped storage hydropower is currently the most viable form of large-scale energy storage, and operation of renewable ...
Hydrogen production from ethanol over mesoporous alumina based catalysts and microwave reactor applications
Gündüz, Seval; Doğu, Timur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2014)
Due to fast depletion of fossil fuel resources and related environmental impact of CO2 emissions, the interest in hydrogen as a clean energy carrier has recently increased. Hydrogen production from bio-ethanol, which already contains large amount of water, by steam reforming process, has shown excellent potential with CO2 neutrality and renewability. Steam reforming of ethanol (SRE) process has a highly complex reaction network including numerous side reactions which decrease hydrogen yield and have a negat...
Hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming in a microwave reactor
Nikazar, Sohrab; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Doğu, Timur; Department of Chemical Engineering (2019)
Today’s world is facing crucial environmental issues, such as climate change and greenhouse gas emission, mainly attributed to the overusing fossil fuels. An environmentally friendly and sustainable replacement is proton exchange membrane fuel cell system which is a promising technology fed by hydrogen. However, fuel cell’s anode catalyst is sensitive to amount of CO in the feed stream. Steam reforming of methanol is an appropriate method for hydrogen production. Nevertheless, endothermic nature of this rea...
Experimental and numerical modeling of direct injection of CO 2 into carbonate formations
Izgec, O.; Demiral, B.; Bertin, H.; Akın, Serhat (Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE); 2006-11-20)
Sequestration of carbon dioxide in geological formations is an alternative way to manage the carbon emitted by combustion of fossil fuels. Results of an experimental and numerical modeling study aiming to investigate the important aspects of injection of CO2 in carbonate formations are presented. Different from sandstones, in carbonates surface reaction rates are very high, so mass transfer often limits the overall reaction rate, leading to highly non-uniform dissolution patterns. Often, large flow channels...
