Closed timelike curves and geodesics of gödel-type metrics

2008-12-01
It is shown that the spacetimes described by Gödel-type metrics with both flat and non-flat backgrounds and with constant uk always have CTCs or CNCs. The geodesic curves of these spacetimes are characterized by a lower dimensional Lorentz force equation for a charged point particle in the relevant Riemannian background. An explicit example is given for which timelike and null geodesics can never be closed. © 2008 World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Fibre products of Kummer covers and curves with many points
Özbudak, Ferruh (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2007-10-01)
We study the general fibre product of any two Kummer covers of the projective line over finite fields. Under some assumptions, we obtain an involved condition for the existence of rational points in the fibre product over a rational point of the projective line so that we determine the exact number of the rational points. Using this, we construct explicit examples of such fibre products with many rational points. In particular we obtain a record and a new entry for the table (http://www.science.uva.nl/(simi...
Continuous dimensionality characterization of image structures
Felsberg, Michael; Kalkan, Sinan; Kruger, Norbert (Elsevier BV, 2009-05-04)
Intrinsic dimensionality is a concept introduced by statistics and later used in image processing to measure the dimensionality of a data set. In this paper, we introduce a continuous representation of the intrinsic dimension of an image patch in terms of its local spectrum or, equivalently, its gradient field. By making use of a cone structure and barycentric co-ordinates, we can associate three confidences to the three different ideal cases of intrinsic dimensions corresponding to homogeneous image patche...
Global Binary Patterns: A Novel Shape Descriptor
Erdal, Sivri; Kalkan, Sinan (null; 2013-05-23)
In this paper, we propose a novel shape descriptor, called Global Binary Patterns (GBP), based on interpreting intensity values along a direction in an image as binary numbers, converting these binary numbers to their decimal values and concatenating these decimal values as the elements of a vector that is the GBP representation of the shape. Comparing with some widelyused state-of-the-art methods in the literature, we show that GBP is very fast and its performance on several widely-used databases is compar...
WEIGHTED HOMOGENEOUS SINGULARITIES AND RATIONAL HOMOLOGY DISK SMOOTHINGS
Bhupal, Mohan Lal (2011-10-01)
We classify the resolution graphs of weighted homogeneous surface singularities which admit rational homology disk smoothings. The nonexistence of rational homology disk smoothings is shown by symplectic geometric methods, while the existence is verified via smoothings of negative weight.
Finite number of fibre products of Kummer covers and curves with many points over finite fields
Özbudak, Ferruh (2014-03-01)
We study fibre products of a finite number of Kummer covers of the projective line over finite fields. We determine the number of rational points of the fibre product over a rational point of the projective line, which improves the results of Ozbudak and Temur (Appl Algebra Eng Commun Comput 18:433-443, 2007) substantially. We also construct explicit examples of fibre products of Kummer covers with many rational points, including a record and two new entries for the current table (http://www.manypoints.org,...
