Tanvir Wasti

Syed Tanvir Wasti was born in 1941 in Lahore, Pakistan. Completing the first year of his engineering education in Karachi, he won a scholarship awarded by the Turkish Government and joined the Faculty of Engineering at Middle East Technical University [METU] in January 1958. After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1961 he proceeded to Cambridge University and completed his doctoral studies in 1965. Returning to Turkey, he became a faculty member in the METU Civil Engineering Department. Although most of Tanvir Wasti’s academic career was at METU, he spent the periods 1969-1971 and 1978-1980 at the University of California, Berkeley as a Visiting Research Engineer. In 1979 he obtained the qualification of P.E. [Professional Engineer] by examination in California. Between 1976-1978 he was a Professor at the University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, Pakistan. Tanvir Wasti’s academic and research activities have been in the areas of Structural Mechanics and Earthquake Engineering. He is the author of many publications in English as well as Turkish. Tanvir Wasti has also conducted research in historical topics; 27 of his articles have been published in the journal Middle Eastern Studies in London. Prof. Dr. Syed Tanvir Wasti retired from METU in June 2006. He is married to Prof. Dr. Yıldız Wasti; they have two daughters, both academics, and also two grandchildren.
