Prof. Dr. Cahit Çıray graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering at Istanbul Technical University in 1955 and started to work as an assistant at METU Hydraulic Laboratory in 1960. Afterwards, he received his doctorate degree from Imperial College, University of London. Çıray was appointed as the Founding Chairman of METU Aeronautics and Aeronautical Engineering Department in 1981 and took part in foundation of the department after he had worked as the Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering between 1978 and 1979. He retired in 1998. After retirement, he continued giving lectures at the Department of Civil Engineering.
