Prof. Dr. Tarık Somer completed his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1950. He received his master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952 and his doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1954. Starting his work in METU in 1957, Somer took part in the establishment of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Somer, who received the titles of Associate Professor in 1958 and Professor in 1964, served as the Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at METU (1958-1970), the Vice Rector of METU (1973-1974), the Vice President of the Interuniversity Board (1974), and the President of METU (1974-1976).
