Mehmet Gönlübol

Mehmet Gönlübol, who served as rector at METU between 01.08.1982 and 31.07.1987, is a Turkish political scientist and lecturer (Tikveş, Thessaloniki 1924). After graduating from Izmir Higher School of Economics and Commerce (1947), he went to the USA and earned a master's degree in political science at the University of Denver (1952) and a doctorate in political science and international relations at New York University (1955). When he returned home, he was appointed as a faculty member at Ankara Faculty of Political Sciences. Gönlübol, who gave lectures at foreign universities for short periods of time, became the head of the Department of International Relations at the Faculty of Political Sciences in 1970. He was a member of the Turkish delegation at the Naval Conference between 1972 and 1980. In 1982, he was appointed as the rector of the Middle East Technical University.
