1983
Acar, Feride
This article discusses the findings of a stııdy done on a group of Turkish women faculty members in- vestigating their motivations, career commitments, role perceptions. role performances and self-evalua- tions. It focuses on tracing the evolution of female academics' career patterns via an analysis of their social background characteristics, role priorities, emerging role conflicts and attempts at conflict re- solution. The aim of the study, based on in-depth investigation of a limited number of cases, has been to suggest hypotheses regarding the conditions and problems of professional women in a society cha- racterized by conflicting formal and informal norms regarding women. To this end, two ideal-typical profiles of academic women were developed as pos- sible guidelines to further analysis.
