Cemil Yamalı was born in Shumen in 1950. He completed his undergraduate education at METU Mechanical Engineering Department in 1973 and his master's degree in 1976. He received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1983. During his master's degree, he worked as a research assistant at METU Mechanical Engineering Department. He served as an Assistant Professor between 1985 and 1988, and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering until 2017, when he retired. Between 1989 and 1991, he worked on computational thermodynamics for the defense industry at TÜBİTAK Ballistic Research Institute.
