Güner Mutaf was born in Ankara on June 24, 1947. He spent his high school years in İzmir. He graduated from İzmir College in 1964. He graduated from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at METU Faculty of Architecture in 1970. He received his master's degree from the Department of Architecture in 1973. During his student years, he took the elective industrial design courses opened by American designer David Munro in the Department of Architecture; he completed his master's thesis, which he designed an operating bed, under Munro's supervision. After completing his master's degree, Mr. Mutaf started working as a research assistant in the Department of Architecture. He became a lecturer in 1976; he contributed to the Basic Design courses, the Industrial Design elective course and the summer internship. Starting from 1974, he carried out the establishment of the Department of Industrial Product Design together with Mehmet Asatekin. Between 1976 and 1978, he worked with Erik Herlov at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark; He carried out preparatory work for the METU Department of Industrial Product Design. He transferred to this department when the Industrial Product Design undergraduate program was opened in 1979. He taught a wide variety of courses until April 1985. Between 1985 and 1994, he took a break from his full-time position at METU and focused on his professional work. He made significant contributions to education, primarily through design studios, internships and mechanism courses, until his retirement from the METU Department of Industrial Product Design in May 2007. Güner Mutaf, an educator who never lost touch with practice, developed his own diving equipment in his youth; designed musical instruments; and later built his own catamaran. He carried out many design and application projects on technical equipment, urban furniture, lighting, corporate and special interior designs. He designed for companies such as Gama Elektronik, Koleksiyon Mobilya, and Dokap; and implemented interior applications for many institutions such as Hilton, Çırağan, and Swiss Hotel in Turkey and abroad. As an educator, Güner Mutaf instilled in his students the need to analyze their surroundings through the eyes of a designer, drew attention to details in design that no one else noticed, and skillfully showed practical solutions to seemingly unsolvable problems. He was known for his productivity, superior talents, and modest personality despite his intelligence.
