Wireless sensor networks for security: Issues and challenges
Onel, T; Onur, Ertan; Ersoy, C; Delic, H (2006-01-01)
In this chapter, the sensing coverage area of surveillance wireless sensor networks is considered. The sensing coverage is determined by applying Neyman-Pearson detection and defining the breach probability on a grid-modeled field. Using a graph model for the perimeter, Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm is used to find the weakest breach path. The breach probability is linked to parameters such as the false alarm rate, size of the data record and the signal-to-noise ratio. Consequently, the required number...
Wireless network coding for multiple unicast transmissions
Aktaş, Tuğcan; Yılmaz, Ali Özgür; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
In this work, firstly we propose a practical and effective cooperative communication technique based on network coding (NC) in order to mitigate the detrimental consequences of fading in wireless channels. We base our formulation on multiple unicast transmissions which is the natural way of communication in many modern wireless networks. The proposed technique utilizes spatial diversity through cooperation between overhearing nodes which carry out distributed encoding operations dictated by the generator ma...
Wireless Sensing in Complex Electromagnetic Media: Construction Materials and Structural Monitoring
Ozbey, Burak; DEMİR, Hilmi Volkan; Kurç, Özgür; ERTÜRK, VAKUR BEHÇET; ALTINTAŞ, AYHAN (2015-10-01)
In this paper, wireless sensing in the presence of complex electromagnetic media created by combinations of reinforcing bars and concrete is investigated. The wireless displacement sensing system, primarily designed for use in structural health monitoring (SHM), is composed of a comb-like nested split-ring resonator (NSRR) probe and a transceiver antenna. Although each complex medium scenario is predicted to have a detrimental effect on sensing in principle, it is demonstrated that the proposed sensor geome...
Wireless and mobile security
Bicakci, K; Baykal, Nazife (2001-09-08)
User mobility is becoming an important and popular feature in today's network. This is especially evident in wireless environment. Security is one of the challenging problems introduced by mobile and wireless networking. There are many aspects to the provisioning of security that need to be addressed as part of the development and deployment of future wireless mobile networks. This paper discusses a wide range of issues related to security in wireless and mobile networking and reviews current state-of-the-a...
Cooperative relaying schemes for narrow-band frequency hopping wireless ad hoc networks
Yenihayat, Güven; Onat, Furuzan Atay; Kolaǧasioǧlu, Ertuǧrul; Yılmaz, Ali Özgür (2011-08-29)
Cooperative relaying is a promising technique for improving the performance of weak communication links in wireless networks by exploiting spatial diversity induced by relay transmissions. This paper considers cooperative relaying schemes for a narrow- band frequency hopping system. A novel hybrid relaying scheme called opportunistic hybrid relaying, which is specifically designed for this system, is presented. Unlike most relaying schemes in the literature, opportunistic hybrid relaying uses bandwidth effi...
