By recontextualizing spatiality, it is arguable that the meaning of ءspace̕ as a term varies from the most local to the global geographies. ءSpace̕ as a term for this thesis does not only mean the architectural spaces, but also the social spaces. This thesis aims to define and investigate the dynamics of ءThirdspace̕ as a key term and to locate it in the specifities of urban within the area of resistance and transgression. ءThirdspace̕ is illustrated as a wider sphere of participation forpolitical resistance. As a space, it is the new meeting places for diverse oppositional practices, for multiple communities of resistance. It is a space that is both center and the margin, which enables the radical social action everywhere in the world, from local to the global. The theoretical framework for understanding the tools of our critical approach will be provided by a comprehensive literature about ءidentity politics,̕ which can be defined as the theoretical base of the concept of ءThirdspace.̕ After an extensive analysis about the dynamics of ءThirdspace̕ for political resistance, it is concerned to locate the concept of ءThirdspace̕ within the material world as a case study. The case study aims to exemplify firstly the ءIstiklal Street̕ as ءThirdspace̕, secondly political position of ءSaturday̕s Mothers̕ as ءthirdspace of political choice̕, and lastly to demonstrate the reciprocal relations between them within the framework of the relationship between space and politics.

Approaching non-western consumer cultures from a historical perspective: The case of early modern Ottoman consumer culture
Karababa, Eminegül (2012-03-01)
A very common but futile practice in scientific research investigating non-western consumercultures and markets is the imposition of concepts that are derived from a single historical trajec-tory of western modernization. This paper aims to show that there are alternative historical trajec-tories in the early modern period which have formed today’s multiple modern consumer cultures. The particularities of the Ottoman context, which shaped the development of an alternative earlymodern consumer culture, are ex...
History and theory in the construction of Ozbeg and Kazakh identity
Gürbüz, Yunus Emre; Togan, İsenbike; Department of History (2003)
The purpose of this dissertation is to follow the process of the emergence and development of the peoples called as Özbegs and Kazakhs by using both emic and etic sources of knowledge and to reflect the differences in perception. The period I have studied covers the post-Chinggisid period in Eurasia, where the tribes defined as Özbegs and Kazakhs emerged. The long period as well as both etic and emic sources I have examined showed that identities are outcomes of the habitus, which affects our perception. As...
Designing the heterotopia: from social ideology to spatial morphology
Çalışkan, Olgu; Tümtürk, Onur (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-03-01)
The established binary oppositions like 'modern vs. traditional' or 'urban vs. rural' fall short either to comprehend or to (re)generate cultural complexity of the contemporary societies. This problem is usually exposed by the critiques questioning the nature of design in urbanism reducing the domain to formal, functional or stylistic expressions in practice. The alternative track exposing another strategic outlook in the search for 'enforced' diversity within the neighbourhood, however, reveals some other ...

Demir, S; Atabey, Cemile Müjde; Öner Özkan, Bengi (null; 2018-11-17)
Although the literature on uniqueness has emphasized that it is unique to the Western culture, recent studies have indicated that the need for uniqueness is getting more familiar to the Eastern culture. The current study aimed to get a deeper understanding of uniqueness by investigating the concept among international students. Primarily, the perception and evaluation of uniqueness by participants from other cultures is investigated. The data were collected from seven international undergraduate students st...
Investigating molecular mechanisms of TRAF7 mutations identified by genome-wide analysis
Gülez, Burcu; Erson Bensan, Ayşe Elif; Günel, Murat; Department of Biotechnology (2017)
Meningiomas are defined as the most common primary intracanial neoplasms which originate from meninges. Recent genomic studies identified critical driver mutations in several genes including TRAF7 (TNF Receptor-Associated Factor 7) . Previously, studies performed in Prof. Gunel’s laboratory suggested that mutant forms of TRAF7 protein were more stable, possibly due to change in their ubiquitination level. To begin understanding the underlying mechanisms, we looked into interaction partners of TRAF7. TRAF7 i...
