This thesis describes an Intelligent Tutoring System developed to be used in distance education at Master̕s level. The system was designed and implemented to help teachers to generate course material for online tutoring and to help the students to navigate through the course material according to their knowledge level. The system integrates many new technologies and provides individualized learning for students which is one of the most efficient ways for learning. How well the student has learned the course material is tested immediately after each smallest learning unit by end-of-section tests and the knowledge level of the student is derived from the answers given to these tests. This knowledge level is used to build a user model. This thesis describes how this user model is used for navigational support for students while studying on the course material.

Implementation of Education for Sustainability in Turkish Pre-Service Teachers' Practicum
Alici, Sule; Alan, Havva Ayça (2022-01-01)
In this study, we explored early childhood education pre-service teachers' (ECEPTs') understanding and pedagogical application of education for sustainability (EfS) by critically analyzing EfS implementation during ECEPTs' practicum. The study examined the challenges and critical aspects of EfS practices in the practicum, and the relationships among mentor teachers, academic mentors, and ECEPTs. A multiple case study methodology was employed involving two purposefully distinct universities with 14 participa...
Investigating Effect of Origami-Based Instruction on Elementary Students' Spatial Skills and Perceptions
Cakmak, Sedanur; Işıksal Bostan, Mine; KOÇ, YUSUF (Informa UK Limited, 2014-01-02)
The authors' purpose was to investigate the effect of origami-based instruction on elementary students' spatial ability. The students' self-reported perceptions related to the origami-based instruction were also examined. Data was collected via purposive sampling techniques from students enrolled in a private elementary school. A spatial ability test (SAT) was used to measure the students' ability in mentally manipulating objects and their parts in 2- and 3-dimensional spaces. In addition to the SAT, reflec...
Project-based geometry learning: Knowledge and attitude of field-dependent/independent cognitive style students
Ubuz, Behiye (Informa UK Limited, 2019-01-01)
The authors in a convergent parallel mixed method design aimed to investigate whether and how the geometry knowledge and attitude toward geometry of students with field-dependent/independent cognitive style improve differentially within a project-based learning environment. Quantitative data were collected from 97 seventh-grade students before and after the treatment. Repeated measures multivariate analysis of covariance results, controlling for gender and prior mathematics achievement, revealed a statistic...
An Assessment of Factors Related to Science Achievement of Turkish Students
Kalender, Ilker; Berberoglu, Giray (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
In this study, a hypothesised model with latent variables such as socio-economic status, students' perception of success and interest in different subject matter areas, out-of-school activities, and classroom teaching learning activities in relation to science achievement of the students was tested via linear structural modelling. The data come from the Student Assessment Program-2002 conducted by the Ministry of National Education in Turkey. The results obtained in a sample of 29,911 students indicated tha...
Improving students' pronunciation through accent reduction software
Seferoğlu, Gölge (Wiley, 2005-03-01)
This study aimed to find out whether integrating accent reduction software in advanced English language classes at the university level would result in improvements in students' pronunciation at the segmental and sup-rasegmental levels. The study made use of a quasi-experimental research design. Two classes at the Department of Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University in Turkey participated in the study. Whilst one class (the control group) followed traditional instruction, the other c...
