Within the content of this thesis, it was aimed to understand the changes in the biomass and abundance of heterotrophic bacteria and marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus in time with respect to multitude of ambient physical, chemical and biological factors. For this, monthly samples from discrete depths in the offshore (0-20-40-60-80-100-125-150-175-200 m) and in the near shore (surface and 10 m) stations over a period of one year in the Cilician Basin (eastern Mediterranean) were collected via rosette sampler. Epifluorescent microscope and the image analysis system were used to estimate abundance and biomass of both groups. Coastal station was more abundant and had much higher bacterial (heterotrophic bacteria) and cyanobacterial (Synechococcus) biomass than the offshore station as it receives substantial amount of freshwater from the nearby Lamas River throughout the year. The surface annual averages for bacterial and cyanobacterial abundance and biomass were 9600000 cells/ml - 56.5 microgram C/l and 400000 cells/ml - 24.1 microgram C/l, respectively, at the coastal station. The surface annual averages for bacterial and cyanobacterial abundance and biomass were 8100000 cells/ml 49.1 microgram C/l and 210000 cells/ml 10.6 microgram C/l, respectively, at the offshore station. Bacterial population always found to exceed Synechococcus abundance within the water column. In general, bacterial and cyanobacterial abundance and biomass tend to decrease with depth. On a seasonal basis, bacterial population was found excessively dominant at the surface or near-surface waters during the second half of the year. Synechococcus were also found more abundant during late summer and autumn. Temperature and nitrate concentration seemed to affect efficiently the abundance of both populations in the area. Based on Spearman Rank Correlation analysis, highly significant correlations between bacterial abundance as well as biomass and ambient temperature were observed at both stations. However, a significant correlation was found between Synechococcus and temperature only at the offshore station. Significant negative correlations are found between nitrate and bacterial abundance and biomass at both stations and between Synechococcus abundance and biomass only at the offshore station. At the offshore station, salinity was also found to be positively correlated with the bacterial and cyanobacterial abundance and biomass.

Annual variations in biochemical composition of seston and zooplankton community in Mersin bay-Northeastern Mediterranean
Zenginer Yılmaz, Arife; Beşiktepe, Şengül; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2007)
In this study, annual variations in biochemical composition of seston and zooplankton community were investigated to characterize the nutritional environment of zooplankton in the Mersin Bay, NE Mediterranean Sea. For this goal, seawater and zooplankton samples were collected at monthly intervals from two stations; one representing coastal and other representing open waters characteristics from November 2004 to January 2006. Seawater samples were collected with Niskin bottles from the sea surface. Zooplankt...
Monthly changes in primary and bacterial productivity in the North – Eastern Mediterranean shelf waters
Yücel, Nebil; Uysal, Zahit; Department of Marine Biology and Fisheries (2013)
Within the context of this thesis, it was aimed to compare monthly changes in primary and bacterial production rates of eutrophic shelf waters with those of nutrient impoverished oligotrophic open waters taking into consideration of ambient physicochemical properties of the basin waters. In addition, size fractionated primary production and limiting nutrient experiments were also carried out. To achieve these goals, a total of 25 cruises were realized on board R/V Bilim-2 of IMS-METU to collect biological (...
Annual variations in biochemical composition of size fractionated particulate matter and zooplankton abundance and biomass in Mersin Bay, NE Mediterranean Sea
Zenginer Yılmaz, Arife (2010-05-01)
Seasonal changes in biochemical composition of different particle size classes (pico-, nano- and micro-particulate matter) and the zooplankton abundance and biomass were studied in NE Mediterranean between November 2004 and January 2006. Sampling was carried out at monthly intervals from two stations representing coastal and open water characteristics. Dominance of size fractions showed seasonal variations in each biochemical component but on annual average pico size fraction predominated and accounted for ...
Assessment of the trophic status of the Mersin bay waters, Northeastern Mediterranean
Kaptan, Mehmet Salih; Tuğrul, Süleyman; Department of Chemical Oceanography (2013)
Identifying the spatial and temporal variability of eutrophication related indicators such as Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), oxygen saturation (DO%), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and total phosphorus (TP), as a measure of the potential pressures and productivity, were measured within the Mersin Bay, a wide shelf region of the Cilician Basin located in the Northeastern Mediterranean Sea. This study aims to characterize the trophic status of the water masses in the eastern shelf waters of the bay fed by river d...
Spatial and Temporal Variations of Inorganic and Organic Forms of Phosphorus in the Surface and Deep Waters of Erdemli Shelf Zone of Mersin Bay
DOĞAN SAĞLAMTİMUR, NESLİHAN; Tuğrul, Süleyman (2013-01-01)
The aim of this study was to understand spatial and temporal variations of inorganic and organic forms of phosphorus in the surface and deep waters of Erdemli shelf zone of the Mersin Bay. For this goal, timeseries hydrographical and phosphorus data were obtained monthly at the three selected stations between December 2001 and December 2003. The present results have shown that the concentrations of different fractions of total phosphorus displayed a decreasing trend from nearshore to shelfbreak zone of the ...
