Despite extensive preventive efforts, falls continue to be a major source of morbidity and mortality Understanding the methods used to recover from falling is important to develop necessary prevention techniques. Arm movements play an important role in recovering from postural perturbations. This study aimed to understand the effects of arm rotations in three different levels of perturbation. The participants leaned forward in 5.5, 6.5 and 7.5 degrees and suddenly released by switching off the electromagnet attached on their back. A six camera motion analysis system and a force plate were used to record the kinetic and kinematic variables. Visual 3d software was used to create subject specific models. The angular momentum of the arms about the shoulder and MTP joints were calculated. The differences between 5.5 and 6.5 degrees were compared in terms of the angular momentum and the angular velocity of the arms. None of the participants were able to recover from 7.5 degrees. Significant differences were found between 5.5 and 6.5 degrees in peak negative angular momentum of the arms, and negative and positive angular velocity of the forearms. There was no significant difference between the ground reaction forces, steady state times and shoulder torques. The relationships between angular velocity of the arms and Body Mass, Stature, Moments of Inertia of the forearms and BMI were found to be significant for 6.5 degrees. In conclusion, it can be speculated that central nervous system does some very complicated calculation based on the person’s physical characteristics to create necessary kinetic and kinematic effects to recover from falling.

Understanding the Role of Polymer Surface Nanoscale Topography on Inhibiting Bacteria Adhesion and Growth
Liu, Luting; Ercan, Batur; Sun, Linlin; Ziemer, Katherine S.; Webster, Thomas J. (2016-01-01)
Catheter-associated infections, most of which are caused by microbial biofilms, are still a serious issue in healthcare and are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and excessive medical costs. Currently, the use of nanostructured materials, especially materials with nano featured topographies, which have more surface area, altered surface energy, enhanced select protein adsorption, and selectively increased desirable cell functions while simultaneously decreasing competitive cell functions, se...
Determining the role of mutation load in mammalian senescence
Somel, Mehmet; Özer, Füsun; Turan, Zeliha Gözde; Koptekin, Dilek; Ghalichi, Ayshin(2016-12-31)
In most multicellular species, aging is accompanied by an increasing risk of disease and mortality, a process termed senescence. The evolutionary causes and genetic bases of senescence are little understood. Senescence is usually associated with accumulating cellular damage, although a number of theories suggest that harmful mutations that are expressed only at late age could also contribute to the aging phenotype. Analyzing primate brain transcriptome data, we recently identified a pattern that would suppo...
The effect of magnesium ions on vitamin D-2-phospholipid model membrane interactions in the presence of different buffer media
Toyran, N; Severcan, Feride (2000-10-02)
Vitamin D plays important roles in the bone formation, in calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and in the treatment and prevention of many diseases. Ions, especially divalent cations like Mg2+, have indispensable roles in many vital biological events. Mg2+ is involved in many fundamental processes such as stabilization of membranes and macromolecules, synthesis of nucleic acid and proteins and formation and use of high-energy phosphate bonds. Mg2+ is also required for synthesis of more than 310 different enzy...
Removal of antibiotic resistance genes in various water resources recovery facilities
Kucukunsal, Serkan; İçgen, Bülent (Wiley, 2020-06-01)
Water resources recovery facilities (WWTPs) are hotspots for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and pose a significant threat to environments. Therefore, ARG removal efficiencies of WWTPs are of great importance. In this study, conventional activated sludge (CAS), biological nutrient removal (BNR), sequencing batch reactor (SBR), membrane bioreactor (MBR), package MBR, and WWTP with coagulation-flocculation and UV disinfection units were investigated in terms of their removal efficiencies on overall bacteri...
The evaluation of high hydrostatic pressure effects on bovine blood constituents and the microbial survival
Ceylan, Çağatay; Bozoğlu, Faruk; Department of Biotechnology (2005)
The main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of high hydrostatic pressure on the stability of blood constituents for the purpose of an effective reduction of viral and bacterial count. The effect of HHP treatment on the several blood constituents were analyzed at different HHP levels at 25 0C for 5 minutes. The bovine blood as the model material was separated into two major parts; namely, serum and blood cells by centrifugation. Erythrocytes were found to be mostly stable up to 220 MPa pr...
