Effect of near-fault ground motion and damper characteristics on the seismic performance of chevron braced steel frames
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 2007-06-01)
This study is aimed at comparing the seismic performance of steel chevron braced frames (CBFs) with and without fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) as a function of the characteristics of the near-fault (NF) ground motion and FVD parameters. For this purpose, comparative nonlinear time history (NLTH) analyses of single and multiple storey CBFs with and without FVDs are conducted using NF ground motions with various velocity pulse periods scaled to have small, moderate and large intensities. Additionally, NLTH anal...
Effect of Pressure Relief Valves on the Fluid Transients in the Penstocks of a Small Run of River Plant
Samet, Dursun; Bozkuş, Zafer; Dinçer, Ali Ersin (null; 2015-11-20)
It is essential that hydropower plants be operated safely under all conditions. Commonly, engineers design the penstocks of such power plants for negative and/or positive pressure surges, making sure that the penstocks neither will burst nor collapse under adverse flow conditions. The primary goal of this study is to present the test results of an existing run-of-river plant whose penstocks are protected with pressure relief valves near the turbines. Numerical simulations of unprotected system were also per...
Effect of material characteristics on the properties of blended cements containing high volumes of natural pozzolans
Turanlı, Lutfullah; Uzal, B; Bektas, F (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-01)
The effect of three different natural pozzolans from Turkish deposits on the properties of blended cements produced by intergrinding cement clinker with a high volume of natural pozzolan (55 wt.% of the cementitious material) was investigated. The particle size distribution of blended cements, setting time, heat of hydration, and compressive strength of blended cement mortars were determined. Experimental results showed that the hardness of the pozzolanic material strongly influenced the particle size distr...
Effect of Gas Diffusion Layer Characteristics and Addition of Pore-Forming Agents on the Performance of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells
Senguel, Erce; Erkan, Serdar; Eroğlu, İnci; BAÇ, NURCAN (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
The performance of five layer membrane electrode assemblies having different characteristics of gas diffusion layers was determined at 70 degrees C cell temperature and ambient pressure. The maximum power density at 0.6 V was 0.36 W/cm(2) for the membrane electrode assembly prepared with the gas diffusion layer having minimum thickness (SGL BC 30 type). On the other hand, the maximum power density at 0.5 V was 0.44 W/cm(2) for the membrane electrode assembly prepared with SGL BC 34 type gas diffusion layer....
Effect of Fiber Orientation of Bend-Twist Coupled Blades on the Structural Performance of the Wind Turbine System
Şener, Özgün; Kayran, Altan (2017-01-05)
The effect of fibre angle of bend-twist coupled mixed GFRP-CFRP wind turbine blades on the structural performance of the wind turbine system is studied. For the structural performance evaluation, the effect of the use of off-axis plies in the main spar caps of the bendtwist coupled wind turbine blade on the reduction of damage correspondent internal loads in the whole wind turbine system, electrical power produced, tower-blade end gap, and maximum stress in the blades are taken as major criteria. Different ...
