Extracting eye movement events from raw data has become important upon the introduction of affordable eye trackers. The common approach in current algorithms is that they take into account velocity and position information separately. In this paper, we analyze the pros and cons of the current algorithms and introduce a novel algorithm based on the distribution of raw eye movement data.

Mining eyetracking data to characterise users and theirpatterns of use
Öder, Melih; Betin Can, Aysu; Department of Information Systems (2019)
Eye tracking studies typically collect an enormous amount of data that encodes a lot of information about the users’ behavior and characteristics on the web. However, there are not many studies that mine such data to learn and discover user characteristics and profiles. The main goal of this study is to mine eye tracking data by machine learning methods to create data models which characterise users and predict their characteristics, in particular, familiarity and gender. Detecting users’ characteristics can...
Design and development of a game based eye training program for children with low vision
Dönmez, Mehmet; Çağıltay, Kürşat; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2020)
This study explores the design principles of eye movement-based computer game applications as training material for children with low vision to enhance their vision skills. It aims to provide children with interactive materials to improve their vision. For the study, design-based research was employed in four phases, namely analysis, development, evaluation and testing, and documentation and reflection. In the analysis phase, a focus group meeting and interviews were conducted with experts from the field of...
Use of large multi touch interfaces: a research on usability and design aspects
Dönmez, Mehmet; Çağıltay, Kürşat; Department of Information Systems (2015)
This study explores the design considerations and usability factors of using large multi touch interfaces. During this study, an experimental approach incorporating a large multi touch interfaces environment was used. After the expert analysis and pilot test session, there were end user usability test sessions. During the data collection from both expert and non-expert users, there were interview sessions. After collecting data, two different analysis methods were used, namely, analysis for eye movement dat...
Investigation of classroom management skills by using eye-tracking technology
Çoşkun, Atakan; Çağıltay, Kürşat; Department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology (2019)
This study investigates how a wearable eye tracker can be employed to assess and improve the visual attention of the faculty members in a higher education institution. Two experienced faculty members took part in the study. Both of them have been lecturing for more than ten years at the university, so they are experienced teachers. A wearable eye tracker was employed to assess and improve the participants’ visual attention in relation to classroom management skills. Besides, eye-tracking data were supported...
An image encryption algorithm robust to post-encryption bitrate conversion
Akdağ, Sadık Bahaettin; Candan, Çağatay; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2006)
In this study, a new method is proposed to protect JPEG still images through encryption by employing integer-to-integer transforms and frequency domain scrambling in DCT channels. Different from existing methods in the literature, the encrypted image can be further compressed, i.e. transcoded, after the encryption. The method provides selective encryption/security level with the adjustment of its parameters. The encryption method is tested with various images and compared with the methods in the literature ...
