In this study, impact behavior of the aluminum alloys of 7075 and 5083 and the high-strength low-alloy steel, AISI 4140 was investigated under 7.62 mm armor piercing (AP) projectile experimentally. Various heat treatments were applied to the alloys AISI 4140 and 7075 to see the effect of hardness and strength on their ballistic behaviors. Experimental results showed that among the investigated materials, the best ballistic performance was attained with the alloy, 7075-T651 which maintained the ballistic protection with the areal density >= 85 kg/m(2).

Effect of swaging on microstructure and tensile properties of W-Ni-Fe alloys
DURLU, NURİ; Caliskan, N. Kaan; Bor, Sakir (Elsevier BV, 2014-01-01)
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of swaging on the microstructure and tensile properties of high density two phase alloys 90W-7Ni-3Fe and 93W-4.9Ni-2.1Fe. Samples were liquid phase sintered under hydrogen and argon at 1480 degrees C for 30 min and then 15% cold rotary swaged. Measurement of microstructural parameters in the sintered and swaged samples showed that swaging slightly increased tungsten grain size in the longitudinal direction and slightly decreased tungsten grain size i...
Effects of fabrication method on initial powder characteristics and liquid phase sintering behaviour of tungsten
Erol, Mahmut; Erdogan, Metehan; Karakaya, İshak (Elsevier BV, 2018-12-01)
Direct electrochemical production of tungsten involves removal of oxygen in solid state from an important tungsten compound, calcium tungstate, in molten salts. A detailed experimental study was performed to characterize the liquid phase sintering behaviour of the tungsten powder (WE), which was produced by the direct electrochemical reduction technique. All of the tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) compositions covered in this study, contained four parts nickel, one part cobalt and over 90 wt% tungsten. The pellet...
On the ballistic performance of the AA7075 based functionally graded material with boron carbide reinforcement
Balci, E.; Sarikan, B.; ÜBEYLİ, MUSTAFA; CAMUŞCU, NECİP; Yıldırım, Raif Orhan (2013-01-01)
In this study, the functionally graded materials (FGMs) bearing three layers were produced via hot pressing to investigate their ballistic performances against 7.62 mm armor piercing (AP) projectile. In the FGM samples, the bottom layer was considered as unreinforced AA7075 alloy, whereas the middle and top layers were made of the AA7075 composite layers having various proportions of B4C particles. Prior to the ballistic testing, the hardness change in the layers with respect to aging time at different temp...
The structural and electronic properties of BAs and BP compounds and BPxAs1-x alloys
Mohammad, Rezek; Katırcıoğlu, Şenay (Elsevier BV, 2009-10-19)
The structural and electronic properties of BAs and BP compounds and BPxAs1-x alloys have been investigated by full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method based on DFT The total energies and electronic band structures of these compounds have been calculated for different approximations of exchange-correlation energy. The comparative study has showed that the PW-GGA is the best one to produce the measured structural quantities of the compounds. such as the lattice constant, bulk modulus, ...
Synthesis and characterization of aluminum alloy 7075 reinforced with silicon carbide particulates
Kalkanlı, Ali (2008-01-01)
In this study 7075 matrix alloy is chosen and SiC particles having average particle size of 29 mu m was incorporated into the alloy at the liquid state before vertical pressure casting. Four different additions of SiCp were made and the weight fractions used are 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%. Composites were processed by vertical pressure/squeeze casting machine developed at Middle East Technical University (METU) under 80 MPa pressure. The mold is specially designed to produce specimens for tensile and three point...
