Reactions of 1S, 1D, and 3P carbon atoms with water. Oxygen abstraction and intermolecular formaldehyde generation mechanisms; An MCSCF study

2012-02-05
Reactions of singlet and triplet carbon atoms with water are explored theoretically using CASSCFMCQDPT2, CCSD, and DFT methodologies. The 1S carbons are found to be unreactive. Depending on the carbon atom generation method and the reaction medium, gas-phase C(3P) attacking water may generate CO and atomic hydrogen as the end products. Reaction paths of the C(1D) + H2O system are complicated due to the involvement of two reactive potential energy surfaces with branchings occurring along each. Modifications in product distributions for reactions taking place in condensed phases are elaborated. The decisive reaction conditions, under which the oxygen abstraction and intermolecular formaldehyde generation dominate, are suggested to clarify the discrepancy related with experimental CO observation. The findings are consistent with available experimental data on this system. Oxygen abstraction and intermolecular formaldehyde generation mechanisms suggested here are capable of serving as models for similar reactions of alcohols. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis and photooxygenation of homochiral 2-methylpyrrole derivatives of chiral amino alcohols: simple, selective access to chiral bicyclic lactams
Aydogan, F; Demir, Ayhan Sıtkı (2004-01-26)
Homochiral 2-methylpyrrole derivatives are synthesized in high yields starting from chiral amino alcohols and 5-chloro-3-pentene-2-one. The photooxygenation of these compounds in the presence of a photosynthesizer furnishes the pyrrolooxazolone structures in high diastereoselectivities. In all of the examples, trans-isomers are formed as the major products.
Observation of Oscillatory Surface Reactions of Riboflavin, Trolox, and Singlet Oxygen Using Single Carbon Nanotube Fluorescence Spectroscopy
Sen, Fatih; Boghossian, Ardemis A.; Sen, Selda; Ulissi, Zachary W.; Zhang, Jingqing; Strano, Michael S. (2012-12-01)
Single-molecule fluorescent microscopy allows semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to detect the adsorption and desorption of single adsorbate molecules as a stochastic modulation of emission intensity. In this study, we identify and assign the signature of the complex decomposition and reaction pathways of riboflavin in the presence of the free radical scavenger Trolox using DNA-wrapped SWCNT sensors dispersed onto an aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) coated surface. SWCNT emission is qu...
Synthesis of N-substituted Pyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidines for the Large-Scale Production of Self-Assembled Rosettes and Nanotubes

N-substituted pyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidines are heterocycles which exhibit the asymmetric hydrogen bonding codes of both guanine and cytosine at 60 degrees angles to each other, such that the molecules self-organize unambiguously into a cyclic hexamer, assembled via 18 intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The synthesis is straightforward and can be concluded in six steps from the commercially available malononitrile dimer. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the supermacrocyclic structure shows an undulating disk with ...
Synthesis of conducting block copolymers and their use in the immobilization of invertase and polyphenol oxidase enzyme
Kıralp, Senem; Kıralp, Senem; Department of Chemistry (2004)
A new thiophene derivative containing menthyl group (MM) was synthesized and polymerized via chemical and electrochemical methods. Polymers obtained and MM itself were used to synthesize copolymers with pyrrole under conditions of constant potential electrolysis. Cyclic Voltammetry, thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy analyses were performed for the characterization of samples. Immobilization of invertase and polyphenol oxidase enzymes was performed in the matrices obtained via copolymerizatio...
Synthesis, characterization and electrochromic properties of copolymer of 3-{[4-(thien-3-yl-methoxy)phenoxy]methyl} thiophene with thiophene
Erden, Ayca; Sahin, Elif; Gullu, Mustafa; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2006-08-01)
(3- {[4-(Thien-3-yl-methoxy)phenoxy]methyl} thiophene) (TMPMT) was synthesized via the reaction of 3-bromomethyl-thiophene with hydroquinone and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Electrochemical copolymerization of TMPMT with thiophene in acetonitrile/boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (AN/BFEE) solvent mixture was achieved using tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB) as the supporting electrolyte. Resulting copolymer was characterize...
