Variability in Sidewalk Pedestrian Level of Service Measures and Rating

2018-12-01
Treating walking as a mode, transportation engineers developed the pedestrian level of service (PLOS), a concept evaluating pedestrian traffic characteristics and network capacity, similar to vehicular level of service. Evolution of PLOS resulted in many methods with different scopes and measures trying to better represent the complexity of walking, none of which is superior, nor can their ratings be converted to those of other methods. This paper discusses the variability in PLOS methods proving a lack of consensus and consistency in the literature. A numerical example from the PLOS ratings of 81 walkway locations using 3 different methods shows that each method has benefits, but none of them reflect whole aspects of walking alone. In an attempt to contribute, the need for a revised PLOS rating structure is discussed, suggesting some mathematical techniques to combine different PLOS evaluation results (e.g., minimum value, weighted averaging, and so on). Although this paper defines the main dimensions of walking needed in PLOS evaluations, feedback from different disciplines (e.g., engineering, planning, and psychology) and regions is needed to reach the desired consensus. Pedestrian experiences in Bahçelievler 7th Street: setting the design criteria for the enhancement of urban public realm
Akit, Mert; Bilsel, Fatma Cânâ; Department of City and Regional Planning (2004)
This thesis aims to set out an urban design framework, based on pedestrian experiences and pedestrian spaces, in order to take up streets to design or enhance them as pedestrian friendly urban public places. This could also be considered as a model of approach, which assumes a normative manner. Pedestrian urban places are surveyed, then analyses are drawn that will lead to design. In that framework, the study first summarizes theoretical concepts of urbanity, urban quality and pedestrian experiences, which ...
Pedestrians' Crossing Behaviors and Crossing Preferences: A Field Study
Çinar, Sena; Yılmaz, Şerife; Öz, Bahar (2022-1-01)
© Transactions on Transport Sciences. All rights reserved.Pedestrians are one of the most vulnerable road user groups in traffic and face many risky situations in traffic, especially when pedestrians cross the street, where a pedestrians-vehicle interaction or conflict is most likely. Different from the previous studies on pedestrian behavior, the current study targeted exploring pedestrian behavior and safety at a specific street in Ankara-Tunali Hilmi Street Turkey employing two different data collection m...
Spatio-Temporal Pedestrian Accident Analysis to Improve Urban Pedestrian Safety: The case of the Eskisehir Motorway
Kaygisiz, Omur; Yildiz, Ahmet; Duzgun, Sebnem (2015-01-01)
Determining pedestrian accident hotspots on road segments is a crucial part of the pedestrian safety assessment as it is used to prioritize problematic parts of a road network for in particularly planning and implementation strategies. Moreover, the spatial pattern of the pedestrian accidents may change over time due to several factors. In order to better understand pedestrian safety conditions, pedestrian accident patterns have to be analysed with regard to both space and time. This paper adapts such a spa...
Evaluation of pedestrian safety around bus stops using geographic information systems
Yüksekol, İrem; Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users in terms of traffic safety. Public transit users mostly have a pedestrian trip before and/or after the transit one. Thus, pedestrian activity is produced at transit stops naturally. The main focus of this study is pedestrian safety problems around transit stops, more specifically bus stops. The proposed methodology first includes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses of the pedestrian safety along the study corridors and around bus stops on them; this e...
Reclaiming pedestrian-oriented places to increase walkability in city center the case of Yüksel Street, Ankara
Farnian, Saideh; Yetişkul Şenbil, Emine; Department of City and Regional Planning (2014)
Walking as the basic, cheapest and the most affordable way of transportation, recreation and socialization is a significant means of experiencing a city. Walkability of a city is a measure of how friendly, safe and attractive a city is to walk within it. Walking in a city and the extent to which the built environment supports walking is signifier of civilization and popular walkable spaces particularly in city center are considered as part of collective memory of a city. Accordingly, a well-designed walkabl...
