In this study, polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) coated magnetic nanoparticles were prepared which are targetable to tumor cells in the presence of a magnetic field. The structural properties, functional groups, size distribution, and magnetic properties of the synthesized PHB coated magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, vibrating sample magnetometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. PHB coated nanoparticles are efficiently internalized by the cancer cells in culture, without cytotoxicity. The results demonstrated that PHB coated iron oxide nanoparticles are suitable for targeted delivery of drugs such as chemotherapeutics, siRNA, miRNA, or antibodies.

Altıntaş Yıldırım, Özlem; Durucan, Caner; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2014)
Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures have attracted considerable attention in many electrical, optoelectronic and magnetic applications due to their unique properties originating form characteristic wide band gap and large exciton binding energy of ZnO. Electrical, optical and magnetic properties of ZnO nanostructures strongly depend on their size and morphology. Therefore, there has been a strong interest in the synthesis of ZnO nanostructures with well-controlled size and shape. These synthesis approaches shou...
Analysis of magnetic resonance imaging in inhomogenous main magnetic field
Arpınar, Volkan Emre; Eyüboğlu, Behçet Murat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2009)
In this study, analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in inhomogeneous main magnetic field is conducted. A numerical model based on Bloch equation is implemented for MRI, to understand effect of inhomogeneous magnetic field to Magnetic Resonance (MR) signal. Using the model, relations between inhomogeneity levels in main magnetic field with energy, decay time, bandwidth of the FID signal is investigated. Also relation between the magnetic field inhomogeneity and field of view is determined. To simulat...
Synthesis and functionalization of graphene oxide nanocomposites for anticancer drug delivery
Kamal Mohammed Ahmed Hassan, Heba; Evis, Zafer; Tezcaner, Ayşen; Department of Biomedical Engineering (2022-6-27)
Graphene, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) their derivatives and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), all have a wide range of applications in biomedical applications, particularly anticancer drug delivery, due to their large surface area, chemical and mechanical stability, and good biocompatibility. The first goal of this research is to improve the chemistry and solubility of rGO by doping it with boron and decorating it with AuNPs (Au-B-rGO), as well as to improve the loading efficiency of the anticancer drug doxorubi...
Preparation and characterization of magnetite nanoparticles by thermal decomposition method for their potential use in tumor imaging
Tatlıcı, Zehra; Volkan, Mürvet; Department of Chemistry (2010)
In biomedical applications, magnetic nanoparticles have been used as they offer attractive possibilities. First, they have controllable sizes ranging from a few nanometers up to tens of nanometers and second, the nanoparticles are magnetic and magnetic fields can penetrate into human tissue which means that they can be manipulated by an external magnetic field gradient. In this study, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are synthesized by thermal decomposition method for their potential use in cancer diagnosis. Techniques ...
Synthesis, structural and magnetic characterization of soft magnetic nanocrystalline ternary FeNiCo particles
Toparlı, Çiğdem; Gürmen, Sebahattin (2017-02-01)
The present study focuses on the synthesis, microstructural and magnetic properties of ternary FeNiCo nanoparticles. Nanocrystalline ternary FeNiCo particles were synthesized via hydrogen reduction assisted ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method in single step. The effect of precursor concentration on the morphology and the size of particles was investigated. The syntheses were performed at 800 degrees C. Structure, morphology and magnetic properties of the as-prepared products were characterized through X-ray d...
