Within the Late Cretaceous melange complex of the Izmir-Ankara suture zone in central Sakarya area, north-western Turkey, a megablock with radiolarian cherts associated with basaltic pillow lavas has been dated by radiolarians. The studied radiolarian assemblage and conodonts yielded an early Late Carnian age. This age is the oldest obtained from the chert blocks all along the suture belt and has important implications for the rifting/opening age of the Izmir-Ankara branch of the Tethys ocean in north-western Turkey. Based on this new data, it is concluded that during the Late Triassic the Izmir-Ankara seaway was connected to the other Tethyan oceanic branches and deep enough to provide chert sedimentation and exchange radiolarians with the main open oceans. It is further suggested that the long-lasting misinterpretation of a Liassic rifting/opening of the Izmir-Ankara ocean should be revised. (C) 2002 Editions scientifiques et medicales Elsevier SAS. Diverse upper Ladinian to middle Carnian radiolarian faunas have been obtained from different ribbon cherts blocks and tectonic slices of the Izmir-Ankara Suture Complex and the marginal sediments of the Tauride-Anatolide platform within the Bornova Flysch Zone, western Turkey.
DISCOVERY OF THE LOWER MURGABIAN (MIDDLE PERMIAN) BASED ON NEOSCHWAGERINIDS AND VERBEEKINIDS IN THE TAURIDES, SOUTHERN TURKEY

Lower Murgabian (Roadian) beds have been discovered for the first time in a thick carbonate sequence ranging from Devonian to Triassic in the Hadim area, central Taurides, southern Turkey. The Roadian limestone consists of black algal fusuline packstone and black bioclastic packstone, and contains Presumatrina ciryi n. sp., an evolved form of the genus, Verbeekina erki n. sp., an earliest species of Verbeekina, Dunbarula protomathieui n. sp., an ancestral form of Dunbarula mathieui, and several smaller fora...

Moderately to well-preserved, relatively diverse Middle and Late Triassic radiolarian assemblages have been obtained from the chert slide-blocks within the Late Cretaceous melange of the IntraPontide Suture Zone at the Pelitoren village to the NE of Kastamonu-Arac in northern Central Anatolia. In this locality, chert slide-blocks are tectonically overlain by metamorphic sole of the serpentinized peridotites belonging to the IntraPontide ophiolites. The oldest radiolarian assemblages, with the middle Late An...
First recovery of late Early Triassic (Spathian) pelagic assemblages (radiolarians and conodonts) from block in the Upper Karakaya Complex near Ankara City, central Turkey: Biostratigraphical remarks and correlation

The Upper Karakaya Complex, belonging to the Karakaya Complex, includes different blocks and tectonic slices within a Triassic sheared matrix. This wide-spread unit mainly exposed in northern Turkey also crops out to the southern part of Ankara city near Gokcehuyuk village. Instead of a continuous sequence of Carboniferous to Permian age described in a previous study, five different blocks of various origins and ages are identified in this study. One of the pelagic blocks composing of cherty limestone inclu...

The pre-Early Cambrian Sandikli Basement Complex in western Central Anatolia comprises a low-grade metasedimentary succession (Guvercinoluk Formation) and meta-rhyolites intruded by meta-quartz porphyry rocks (Kestel Cayi Porphyroid Suite). The Guvercinoluk Formation consists of alternation of meta-siltstones and meta-sandstones with olistostromal conglomerates, rare black chert and cherty meta-dolomite lenses. The Kestel Cayi Porphyroid Suite is a deformed, highly sheared dome-shaped rhyolitic body with qu...
