The concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3) and particulate matter were measured for a 6-month period and the concentration of gas phase nitric acid (HNO3) was measured for a 1-month period in the North-eastern Mediterranean atmosphere (Kucuk Calticak, Antalya) using a 'filter pack' system that was developed and optimised in our laboratory. Among all th gas phase pollutants, HNO3 had the lowest concentration (0.42 mug m(-3)) followed by ammonia. Most of the measured parameters showed variation in time depending on strengths of source regions and meteorological conditions. Nitric acid is found mostly in particulate form, but gas to particulate partitioning of SO2 shows seasonal variation. Wind trajectory analyses indicate that the major contribution to the observed concentrations come mostly from Eastern Europe and Blacksea regions as well as the southern sector.

Sampling and analysis of gaseous pollutants and related particulate matter in a Mediterranean site: Antalya-Turkey
Erduran, MS; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2001-12-01)
Gas phase-pollutants, nitric acid (HNO3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ammonia (NH3) and particulate matter, were collected simultaneously for six months from the Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere (Kucuk Calticak, Antalya) using a "filter pack" system developed in our laboratory. This system is a combination of chemically treated filters for the collection of gaseous ammonia and sulfur dioxide, and Teflon and nylon filters for the collection of particulate matter and gaseous nitric acid, respectively. After pre-tre...
Gaseous and Particulate Emissions from Conventional Combustion and Oxy-combustion of a Lignite Coal
Kazanç Özerinç, Feyza (null; 2011-10-12)
This manuscript reports on gaseous and particulate emissions from combustion of a lignite coal (Texas lignite PSOC 1443) in air as well as in a simulated oxy-fuel condition, i.e., in surrounding gases consisting of 40% O2 blended with 60% CO2. Particle sizes were in the nominal range of 53-90 ?m and combustion took place in a laminar-flow drop-tube furnace, electrically-heated to a wall temperature of 1400 K. The evolution of combustion effluent gases, such as NOx, SO2, CO as well as particulate emissions (...
Optimization and field application of a filter pack system for the simultaneous sampling of atmospheric HNO3, NH3 and SO2
Karakas, D; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (1997-06-01)
Optimization and field application of a filter pack system for the simultaneous collection of atmospheric gas-phase HNO3, NH3 and SO2 have been studied. A Teflon prefilter was used to remove particulate matter. Nylon filter, oxalic-acid-treated Whatman 41 filter and sodium-carbonate-treated Whatman 41 filter were used for the collection of HNO3, NH3 and SO2, respectively. For the collection of gas-phase HNO3, nylon filters had better efficiency and capacity as compared to NaCl-impregnated Whatman 41 filters...
Spatial and temporal distribution of inorganic and organic pollutant concentrations at Northwestern Anatolia
Sarısaltık, Ufuk; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
Concentrations of inorganic pollutants including NO2, SO2, O3 and organic pollutants including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene and m&p-xylene, which are known as BTEX compounds were measured on a seasonal basis in 13 cities located in the Central and Northern parts of Anatolian Plateau. Cities included in measurements were Ankara, Bartın, Bolu, Çankırı, Düzce, Eskişehir, Karabük, Kastamonu, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Kütahya, Yozgat, and Zonguldak. Sampling was performed in four seasonal campaigns in eac...
Atmospheric trace element and major ion concentrations over the eastern Mediterranean Sea: Identification of anthropogenic source regions
GÜLLÜ, GÜLEN; DOĞAN, GÜRAY; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2005-11-01)
Concentrations of elements and ions measured in aerosol samples collected from March 1992 to the end of December 1993 were investigated to identify source regions affecting chemical composition of aerosols in the eastern Mediterranean atmosphere. Collected samples were analyzed for approximately 40 elements and ions using a combination of atomic absorption spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, ion chromatography and colorimetry. Statistical techniques, such as enrichment factors and a non-...
