Samples of lichen species (Xanthoria parietina) collected from Aegean Region of Turkey were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis to determine the concentrations of 31 elements. The elements (Au, Rb, Zn, Hg, Sb, Cd, As, Cl, Br, and Se) showed enrichment with respect to the crustal composition. It has been hypothesized that lichen data can be examined more meaningfully without the inclusion of elements K, Mg, Ca, and Mn in the factor analysis. Four factors explaning 77.2% of the total variance were identified. The first factor represented the crustal elements Al, Na, Sc, Cr, Fe, La, and Sm along with contaminated soil with loadings of As, V, and Sb. The second factor was associated with mixed emissions including iron works (Cr, Zn, and Sb) and coal burning (As and Sb). The source profile of factor 3 was a strong marine component characterized by the elements Na, Cl, and Br. The factor 4, identified as regional background, contained the high loadings of As, Se, and Sb due to long-range transport of pariculate matter. These findings were supported by the geographical distribution of factor score maps.

Source components and magmatic processes in the genesis of Miocene to Quaternary lavas in western Turkey: constraints from HSE distribution and Hf-Pb-Os isotopes
Aldanmaz, Ercan; Pickard, Megan; Meisel, Thomas; Altunkaynak, Şafak; Sayıt, Kaan; Sen, Pinar; Hanan, Barry B.; Furman, Tanya (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2015-08-01)
Hf-Pb-Os isotope compositions and highly siderophile element (HSE) abundance variations are used to evaluate the mantle source characteristics and possible effects of differentiation processes in lavas from western Turkey, where the eruption of Late Miocene to Quaternary OIB-type intraplate mafic alkaline lavas followed pre-Middle Miocene convergent margin-type volcanism. Concentrations of Os, Ir, and Ru (IPGE) in the OIB-type intraplate lavas decrease with fractionation for primitive melts (MgO > 10 wt%), ...
Source apportionment of trace elements in the Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere
GÜLLÜ, GÜLEN; Ölmez, İlhan; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2004-01-01)
Concentrations of elements and ions, measured in aerosol samples collected during 1993 were investigated to identify sources and source composition of aerosols in the Eastern Mediterranean atmosphere. The factor analysis have shown that Eastern Mediterranean aerosol is a four-component system, including a crustal component, long-range transported pollution component, a marine component and a local pollution component. Main anthropogenic component, which reaches to the region by long-range transport accounts...
Sources regions affecting chemical composition of aerosols and precipitation in the eastern Mediterranean atmosphere determined using trajectory statistics
Gunaydin, GC; Tuncel, G (2002-06-15)
Although fair amount of data on the levels of atmospheric pollutants, such as SO42- NO3-, NH4+, trace elements, O-3 and recently VOC's had been generated in both eastern and western parts of the Mediterranean basin, information on the source regions of these pollutants is scarce. In this study, source regions affecting chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols and precipitation at two sampling locations, which are located on the Mediterranean and Black Sea costs of Turkey, are investigated using trajecto...
Comparison of accumulation capacities of two lichen species analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis
Yenisoy-Karakas, S; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2004-01-01)
Instrumental neutron activation analysis and ICP-OES were used to determine 3 8 elements in two lichen species namely Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr. and Parmelia tiliacea (Hoffm) Ach. which were collected in Aegean Region of Turkey. It was found that the accumulation capacities of two species differed only for the elements Ca, Cl, Cu and Pb by using ANOVA at 95% confidence level. Average concentrations of all elements except for Ba, Mn and Hg were higher in Parmelia tiliacea. For the elements Ba, Br, Co, ...
Sources and source regions effecting the aerosol composition of the Eastern Mediterranean
DOĞAN, GÜRAY; Guellue, G.; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (2008-04-01)
Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to deduce the aerosol sources at a rural site on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, using sample collected between February 1992 and December 1993. Approximately 600 daily aerosol samples were collected and 40 elements and compounds were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, ion chromatography and colorimetry.
