Retailing is a diverse and dynamic industry offering a wide range of goods and services to consumers. There is also an increasing recognition that this corporate retail power is the driving force for the whole of the supply chain. Due to these facts, it is argued that retailing companies have a huge potential to impact on sustainability performance of national economies. In order to materialize this potential, performance in sustainability should be assessed, and evaluating sustainability performance of an industry requires developing a system of performance evaluation framework. In the context of sustainable development, selecting proper sustainability indicators are one of the most crucial steps to fulfill performance evaluations. Since there has been no attempt to develop proper sustainability indicators in retailing industry, this paper aims to select appropriate indicators for future evaluation of industrial sustainability performance for grocery retailing in terms of three sustainability aspects: social, environmental and economic. To this end, (1 a comprehensive analysis of the existing literature was done, (2) and Analytic Hierarchy Process/Weighted Additive model-based table was developed to rank the indicators for each aspect, (3) the input for the tables was obtained from rapidly growing grocery retailing industry in Turkey by conducting surveys, and (4) using the average values of the tables, sustainability indicators for each aspect were ranked and the most appropriate ones were selected. Determining online consumer typologies and their shopping behaviors in B2C e-commerce platforms
Huseynov, Farid; Demirörs, Onur; Türetken, Oktay; Department of Information Systems (2016)
Business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce is the service or product exchange from businesses to consumers over the Internet. B2C e-commerce enables customers to easily compare offered products and services, to find cheaper and better ones from many alternatives and to shop from any given store without physically visiting them. Despite those conveniences provided by B2C e-commerce, a large number of customers prefer to stay away from the idea of shopping over internet due to several factors. For better customer ...
A novel hybrid method using fuzzy decision making and multi-objective programming for sustainable-reliable supplier selection in two-echelon supply chain design

Therefore, finding the best approaches to achieve companies' goals is a crucial concern in supply chain management, and the majority of organizations prefer to cooperate with reliable and sustainable companies. In designing a supply chain, the supplier se...
Operating policies for energy generation and revenue management in single-reservoir hydropower systems
Ak, Mumtaz; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Savaşaneril Tüfekci, Seçil (Elsevier BV, 2017-10-01)
We study the reservoir management problem in hydropower plants, and propose operating policies to maximize the average annual energy generation or the average annual revenue. Under revenue maximization, our policies allow for short-term electricity price variations to be incorporated into the long-term plan. First, we provide a detailed review of hydropower plant operation, focusing on implicit stochastic optimization approaches and integration of energy price variations in reservoir management. Then, we ex...
Sustainable textile production: a case study from a woven fabric manufacturing mill in Turkey
Alkaya, Emrah; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi (Elsevier BV, 2014-02-15)
The aim of this research was to investigate the applicability of different sustainable production measures and demonstrate environmental and economical benefits in a woven fabric manufacturing mill in Bursa, Turkey. As a result of an Environmental Performance Evaluation (EPE) evaluation, five sustainable production applications were proposed and implemented to decrease water consumption, wastewater generation, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and salt (NaCl) consumption in the company. As a resu...
Solar generated steam injection in heavy oil reservoirs: A case study
Afsar, Cansu; Akın, Serhat (Elsevier BV, 2016-06-01)
Combination of solar generated steam technology and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques have attracted a great deal of attention due to its positive impact on economics and on the environment. Solar steam project has already proven itself as it can reduce both gas consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 80%. However, operational issues as well as geographical factors (i.e. terrain suitability, drill sites and future field development plans) may affect solar EOR operations. In this study, a heavy oil field...
