Phase Behavior of Carbon Dioxide and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes with Two Different Functional Groups

2020-09-01
Phase behavior of carbon dioxide and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) modified with two different functional groups is studied in the temperature range of 308-323 K, up to 22 MPa. Different than the common types, one of the eight functional groups attached to the Si atoms of these POSS is a CO2-philic functional group, methacryl, while the rest are branched alkyl chains, either isooctyl (MIOPOSS) or isobutyl (MIBPOSS). Methacrylisobutyl POSS-CO2 binary system exhibits pressure-induced melting temperature depression. Both molecules have higher solubilities in scCO2 compared to their counterparts with single type of functionality, octaisobutyl POSS, isooctyl POSS and methacryl POSS. The measured highest solubility of MIBPOSS is 0.006 mole fraction at 323 K and 16.8 MPa, while it is 0.0017 mole fraction at 323 K and 22.1 MPa for MIOPOSS. Various density-based semi-empirical models used to model the solubility data gave good correlations with AARD of about 4%.

Phase behavior of beta-D galactose pentaacetate-carbon dioxide binary system
Dilek Hacıhabiboğlu, Çerağ; Gulari, Esin (Elsevier BV, 2006-01-31)
Phase behavior of beta-D galactose pentaacetate-carbon dioxide binary system is investigated by dew-point and bubble-point measurements conducted in a high pressure variable volume sapphire cell. The phase envelope for solutions of beta-D galactose pentaacetate in supercritical M is obtained for beta-D galactose pentaacetate concentrations between 2 and 26 wt%, and for the temperature range of 308-323 K. The system exhibits lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior and high solubility of beta-D ga...
Phase behavior of 1,3,5-tri-tert-butylbenzene-carbon dioxide binary system
Dilek Hacıhabiboğlu, Çerağ; Gulari, Esin (Elsevier BV, 2008-01-01)
1,3,5-tri-tert-butylbenzene (TTBB) is solid at ambient conditions, and has substantial solubility in liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide. We present the phase behavior of TTBB-CO2 binary system at temperatures between 298 and 328 K and at pressures up to 20 MPa. Phase diagrams showing the liquid-vapor, solid-liquid and solid-vapor equilibrium envelopes are constructed by pressure-volume-temperature measurements in a variable-volume sapphire cell. TTBB is highly soluble in CO2 over a wide range of compos...
Enhanced solubility of siloxy-modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes in supercritical carbon dioxide
Demirtas, Cansu; Dilek Hacıhabiboğlu, Çerağ (Elsevier BV, 2019-01-01)
Alkyl siloxy functionalization increases the solubility of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) in supercritical carbon dioxide over an order of magnitude compared to its counterpart with fluoroalkyl groups. The studied component, octatrimethylsiloxy POSS also exhibits higher solubility than other previously studied POSS types with various alkyl and methacryl groups. The octatrimethylsiloxy POSS-CO2 solid-vapor equilibrium curves have been constructed at temperatures between 308 and 328 K by measuri...
Atom transfer rearrangement radical polymerization of (2,4,6-trihalophenolato) Fe(II)/Ce(III)/Ce(IV) complexes in solid state
Celik, Gueler Bayrakli; Sultan, Wadie; Kisakuerek, Duygu (Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2006-11-21)
The synthesis of poly(dihalophenylene oxide)s by thermal decomposition of Fe(II), Ce(III) and Ce(IV) phenolato complexes with pyridine as neutral ligands were achieved at different temperature ranges (140 degrees - 250 degrees C) with different time intervals (3 - 48 hr) via atom transfer rearrangement radical polymerization (ATRRP). The complexes were characterized by FTIR, DSC, UV-Visible, mass spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility and elemental analyses. Structural analyses of polymers were performed by ...
The electronic structure of GanPm(n+m = 5, 17, 29, 35), Ga13P4 (in SiO2) and Ga13P4 (in sodalite) clusters
Katırcıoğlu, Şenay (Elsevier BV, 2004-12-31)
The electronic structure of optimized GanPm(n+m=5, 17, 29, 35) isomers and Ga13P4 cluster in SiO2 matrix and sodalite cage has been studied by Hartree-Fock theory to find out the effect of cluster size and Ga-O bonds on the optical energy gap between LUMO and HOMO. It was found that the optical energy gap of Gal? clusters can be regulated by both the cluster size and the Ga-O interface satisfied by either SiO2 matrix or sodalite cage. The energy gap between LUMO and HOMO of Ga13P4 (in sodalite) cluster has ...
