In this study, Data Envelopment Analysis is used to measure relative efficiencies of academic departments of an engineering college. Input and output criteria are determined and measured utilizing the academic personnel performance measurement scheme of the College. New measures are developed to compare departments of different disciplines. The discriminating power of the measurement models is improved by restricting criteria weights directly and by using a multiple criteria decision making approach. Sensitivity of the results to exclusion of a criterion and changes in relative importance of the criteria is analyzed. Evaluation of the results jointly by the college administration and the departments is explained for a successful efficiency improvement mechanism.

The effects of problem-based learning method on 9th grade students’ achievement in geometry
Apaçık, Mükerrem; Bulut, Safure; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2009)
The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of problem-based learning (PBL) on 9th grade students’ geometry achievement. The study was conducted in a rural town of Ankara with 44 ninth-grade high school students. The randomized pretest-posttest control group design was used. The experimental group was instructed with hybrid PBL and the control group was instructed with traditional teaching methods. The treatment was given for 4 hours every week for a total of six weeks. Geometry Achievement Test (...
The Relative Effectiveness of Integrated Reading Study Strategy and Conceptual Physics Approach
Taslidere, Erdal; Eryılmaz, Ali (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2012-04-01)
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the combined and partial effects of the Integrated Reading/Study Strategy and Conceptual Physics Approach on ninth grade private high school students' achievement in and attitudes toward optics. The Integrated Reading/Study Strategy is a new strategy which was developed by integrating previously existing reading strategies of the KWL and SQ3R with classroom lecturing. The Conceptual Physics Approach is an instructional strategy developed on the basis of C...
The teaching efficacy beliefs of pre-service teachers in the USA and Turkey
Çakıroğlu, Erdinç (Informa UK Limited, 2008-02-01)
The purpose of this study was to compare pre‐service elementary teachers' sense of mathematics teaching efficacy beliefs in a Turkish university and in a major American university located in the Midwest. The data for this study were collected by means of the Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument. In the Turkish sample there were 141 pre‐service elementary teachers, and in the American sample there were 104 pre‐service elementary teachers. Results from the study indicate that pre‐service teachers ...
Variation among schools on classroom practices in science based on TIMSS-1999 in Turkey
Aypay, Ahmet; Erdogan, Mehmet; Soezer, Mehmet A. (Wiley, 2007-12-01)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences among schools using student responses in the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study-1999 (TIMSS-99) data. Schools were classified into two groups based on eighth grade students' overall achievement in science. Two different discriminant function analyses were performed to distinguish high- and low-performing schools, based both on classroom practices and factor structures (student-centered activities, teacher-centered activities, attitudes toward...
Analysis of a Content-based Needs Assessment Survey for Physics Teachers
OKTAY, Özlem; Eryılmaz, Ali (Hacettepe University, 2020-04-01)
The purpose of the study is to develop and analyze a content-based needs assessment survey for physics teachers. With this aim, a Teacher Survey on the Nature of Physics (TSNOP) was developed as a measurement instrument for the study. The TSNOP was used to identify inservice physics teachers' needs, wishes, expectations and problems for the Nature of Physics (NOP) unit of a Professional Development Program (PDP). A total of 60 inservice physics teachers participated in the study. TSNOP includes four specifi...
