Theory of impurity induced lattice distortions in the normal phase of charge density wave systems

A phenomenological Ginzburg-Laundau theory is applied to the normal phase of one-dimensional charge-density-wave systems with a finite concentration of impurities. It is found that the interaction between the impurities and the highly polarizable electron gas leads to a strong and oscillatory impurityimpurity interaction, which in turn leads to ordered impurity arrangements and to sizeable periodic lattice distortions. The effect is very strongly dependent on the charge of the impurities, their concentration, and their (interstitial) location in the lattice unit cell. All these factors modify drastically the periodicity associated with the lattice distortion. The theory explains satisfactorily the changing modulation recently observed by Atomic Force Microscopy in the normal (room temperature) phase of NbSe3 with a variety of impurities.

Electromagnetic absorbance properties of a textile material coated using filtered arc-physical vapor deposition method
ESEN, MEHMET; İLHAN, İLHAMİ; KARAASLAN, MUHARREM; ÜNAL, EKİN ANIL; Dincer, F.; Sabah, C. (2015-09-01)
We explore the structure of a textile absorber in terms of its electromagnetic and absorption properties in the microwave region. Its absorption characteristics are similar to those reported for various metamaterial-based absorbers, exhibiting absorption as high as 98% at resonance. In addition, the angular behavior of the absorption properties of the sample reveal incident angle independency, which is the other added value of the study. Also, the suggested textile absorber has a simple configuration, which...
Simulation of flow transients in liquid pipeline systems
Koç, Gencer; Eralp, O. Cahit; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2007)
Transient flow is a situation where the pressure and flow rate in the pipeline rapidly changes with time. Flow transients are also known as surge and Waterhammer which originates from the hammering sound of the water in the taps or valves. In liquid pipelines, preliminary design parameters are chosen for steady state operations, but a transient check is always necessary. There are various types of transient flow situations such as valve closures, pump trips and flow oscillations. During a transient flow, pr...
Simulation of carbon nanotube junction formations
Tasci, E; Malcıoğlu, Osman Barış; Erkoc, S (2003-09-12)
In this work we have examined the possible formation of a junction between two identical C(10,0) carbon nanotubes. One of the tubes was rotated 90 degrees with respect to the other. Simulation have been performed by means of a molecular-dynamics technique at 1K. For this purpose, we have introduced two stiff layers of graphite positioned above and below the nanotubes. By moving these layers we have created an effective force pushing the tubes closer to each other. In this simulation we have used a semi-empi...
Adaptive symplectic and reversible integrators
Karasözen, Bülent (1998-08-21)
The so-called structure-preserving methods which reproduce the fundamental properties like symplecticness, time reversibility, volume and energy preservation of the original model of the underlying physical problem became very important in recent years. It has been shown theoretically and experimentally, that these methods are superior to the standard integrators, especially in long term computation. In the paper the adaptivity issues are discussed for symplectic and reversible methods designed for integrat...
STABILITY OF CONTROL FORCES IN REDUNDANT MULTIBODY SYSTEMS
IDER, SK (1996-01-03)
In this paper inverse dynamics of redundant multibody systems using a minimum number of control forces is formulated. It is shown that the control forces and the task accelerations may become noncausal at certain configurations, yielding the dynamical equation set of the system to be singular. For a given set of tasks, each different set of actuators leads to a different system motion and also to different singular configurations. To avoid the singularities in the numerical solution, the dynamical equations...
