Terahertz pulsed imaging study of dental caries
Karagöz, Burcu; Altan, Hakan (2015-06-23)
Current diagnostic techniques in dentistry rely predominantly on X-rays to monitor dental caries. Terahertz Pulsed Imaging (TPI) has great potential for medical applications since it is a nondestructive imaging method. It does not cause any ionization hazard on biological samples due to low energy of THz radiation. Even though it is strongly absorbed by water which exhibits very unique chemical and physical properties that contribute to strong interaction with THz radiation, teeth can still be investigated ...
Quantitative measurements obtained by micro-computed tomography and confocal laser scanning microscopy
KAMBUROĞLU, KIVANÇ; Barenboim, S. F.; Arituerk, T.; Kaffe, I. (British Institute of Radiology, 2008-10-01)
Objectives: To compare measurements obtained by micro-CT with those obtained by confocal laser scanning microscope in simulative internal resorption cavities.
Evaluation of Threshold Values for Root Canal Filling Voids in Micro-CT and Nano-CT Images
Orhan, Kaan; Jacobs, Reinhilde; Celikten, Berkan; Huang, Yan; de Faria Vasconcelos, Karla; Nicolielo, Laura Ferreira Pinheiro; Buyuksungur, Arda; Van Dessel, Jeroen (Hindawi Limited, 2018-7-16)
While several materials and techniques have been used to assess the quality of root canal fillings in micro-CT images, the lack of standardization in scanning protocols has produced conflicting results. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine a cutoff voxel size value for the assessment of root canal filling voids in micro-CT and nano-CT images. Twenty freshly extracted mandibular central incisors were used. Root canals were prepared with nickel titanium files to an ISO size 40/0.06 taper and then fil...
Automatic Bayesian segmentation of human facial tissue using 3D MR-CT fusion by incorporating models of measurement blurring, noise and partial volume
Şener, Emre; Kanoğlu, Utku; Mumcuoğlu, Ünal Erkan; Department of Engineering Sciences (2012)
Segmentation of human head on medical images is an important process in a wide array of applications such as diagnosis, facial surgery planning, prosthesis design, and forensic identification. In this study, a new Bayesian method for segmentation of facial tissues is presented. Segmentation classes include muscle, bone, fat, air and skin. The method incorporates a model to account for image blurring during data acquisition, a prior helping to reduce noise as well as a partial volume model. Regularization ba...
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and its application towards measurements in biology
Özer, Zeynep; Altan, Hakan; Department of Physics (2016)
Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has proved to be an exceptional tool in measurements of biological and non-biological materials. The main reason why this method is preferred is that terahertz waves are typically harmless on samples due to the low excitation energy. Furthermore, one is able to extract parameters such as the absorption and refractive index easily directly from the data without using modeling. The low energy of the terahertz wave also makes it a useful tool for characterizing dyna...
