Manual processing of multimedia data in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) may not always be possible. This necessitates autonomous operation of data processing at the sink for taking actions as well as communicating with the appropriate personnel whenever needed. In this paper, we propose a framework for fusing and automated processing of incomplete/imprecise WMSN data using active rules. First, data fusion is performed via fuzzy logic to handle the uncertainty in the received data at the sink. We then extend Event-Condition Action (ECA) rules to process the data and infer predefined actions. The proposed approach has been shown to provide automated actions with higher accuracies.

Finding breach paths using the watershed segmentation algorithm in surveillance wireless sensor networks
Onur, Ertan; Delic, H; Akarun, L (2004-01-01)
Considering wireless sensor networks for border surveillance, one of the major concerns is sensing coverage. Breach probability can be used as a measure to analyze the tradeoffs and to determine the required number of sensors to be deployed to obtain a certain security level. In this paper, the sensing coverage of surveillance wireless sensor networks is studied by utilizing a well-known image processing technique. By applying the watershed segmentation algorithm to the sensing coverage graph, the contour p...
Improving performance of network intrusion detection systems through concurrent mechanisms
Atakan, Mustafa; Şener, Cevat; Department of Computer Engineering (2003)
As the bandwidth of present networks gets larger than the past, the demand of Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) that function in real time becomes the major requirement for high-speed networks. If these systems are not fast enough to process all network traffic passing, some malicious security violations may take role using this drawback. In order to make that kind of applications schedulable, some concurrency mechanism is introduced to the general flowchart of their algorithm. The principal aim is...
Routing optimization methods for communication networks
Demircan, Ahmet Emrah; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2005)
This study discusses the routing optimization techniques and algorithms for communication networks. Preventing data loss on overloaded communication links and utilizing link bandwidths efficiently are the main problems of traffic engineering. Load balancing and routing problems are solved using both by heuristics such as genetic algorithms, and simulation techniques. These algorithms work on destination-based or flow-based routing techniques and mainly change the link weight system or try to select the best...
An Investigation of Link Quality Assessment for Mobile Multi-hop and Multi-rate Wireless Networks
Zhou, Jinglong; Jacobsson, Martin; Onur, Ertan; Niemegeers, Ignas (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2012-07-01)
Wireless ad hoc networks will be an important component in future communication systems. The performance of wireless ad hoc networks can be improved by link quality-aware applications. Wireless link quality is dynamic in nature, especially in mobile scenarios. Therefore, accurate and fast packet delivery ratio estimation is a prerequisite to good performance in mobile, multi-hop and multi-rate wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose a novel packet delivery ratio estimation method that improves t...
Soft decoding of convolutional product codes on an FPGA platform
Sanlı, Mustafa; Yılmaz, Ali Özgür; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2005)
In today̕s world, high speed and accurate data transmission and storage is necessary in many fields of technology. The noise in the transmission channels and read-write errors occurring in the data storage devices cause data loss or slower data transmission. To solve these problems, the error rate of the received information must be minimized. Error correcting codes are used for detecting and correcting the errors. Turbo coding is an efficient error correction method which is commonly used in various commun...
