The key design parameter for most solid-liquid operations in a stirred tank is the just suspended speed, N-js. In majority of the literature N-js is determined by visual observation of the tank bottom. This method is observer dependent, and the results may vary up to 38% between two observers. A more recent method, pressure gauge measurement (PGM) method, is promising as it is based on pressure measurements at the bottom of the tank, and therefore is observer independent. This method also does not require a transparent vessel which eases its use in industrial applications. The PGM method was developed for slurries of low to moderate solids concentrations with N-js values corresponding to relatively low impeller speeds. In this study the applicability of PGM method was tested at conditions beyond the limits that it was developed. The slurries that were tested were in general closer to slurries that are used in industrial applications - high solids concentrations, more than one solid phase, high-density solids, but also slurries with low settling velocity solids were tested. It was found that the application of PGM method required some caution when these slurries were used. The problems encountered with collection and analysis of data at these out-of-limit applications and the solutions to overcome these problems are reported. In this study, for the first time in literature, the visual observation method and the PGM method were compared using a large data set. The two measurements varied up to 12.8%, which shows that the PGM method can confidently be used for finding N-js of industrial slurries. (C) 2018 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Critical analysis of Zwietering correlation for solids suspension in stirred tanks
Ayrancı Tansık, İnci (Elsevier BV, 2014-03-01)
Design specifications for solids suspension (just suspended speed-N-js) in stirred tanks are currently based on the original form of the Zwietering correlation. There are several limitations of this correlation which can lead to poor predictions. The limitations, however, are not clearly defined. In this paper we review the reported limitations of applicability of the Zwietering correlation in detail, and propose ways to predict N-js which extend some of these limits. New data is reported and a detailed ana...
Electropolishing of an Fe-Ni-Co Alloy in Acetic Acid-Perchloric Acid Mixture
Aksu, Yasemin; ERDOĞAN, METEHAN; Demirci, Gokhan; Karakaya, İshak (2016-06-02)
Among Fe-Ni-Co alloys, Kovar (53%Fe-29%Ni-17%Co) designated as ASTM F-15 (1), is a well-known glass-sealing alloy. It is also classified as low–expansion alloy (2). Low expansion is required to avoid internal stresses in applications that involve strong ceramic to metal joining such as in vacuum systems (3-6). Electropolishing is applied to obtain smooth metallic surfaces to gain low outgassing rates from the chamber walls in vacuum applications (7-9). The effects of current density, perchloric acid concent...
Development of ceria and tungsten promoted nickel/alumina catalysts for steam reforming of diesel
Bozdag, A. Arslan; Kaynar, A. D. Deniz; Doğu, Timur; Sezgi, Naime Aslı (Elsevier BV, 2019-12-01)
Use of diesel fuel for on-board hydrogen production for auxiliary power units (APUs) through diesel steam reforming (DSR) reaction is a promising route. Coke minimization for cheap and active Ni/Al2O3 catalyst is necessary for long term operation in DSR reaction. Coke minimization with high hydrogen productivity can be accomplished through the optimization of operating conditions and promoting the Ni/Al2O3 catalyst with ceria (CeO2) and tungsten (W) which attracts attention with their coke resistive propert...
EVALUATION OF SECOND VIRIAL COEFFICIENTS FROM SATURATION DATA
Orbey, H.; Orbey, N. (Informa UK Limited, 1989-3)
A data reduction technique is introduced for the evaluation of second virial coefficients of gases at subcritical temperatures. The method makes use of the vapor-liquid equilibrium data, i.e., temperature, saturation pressure, liquid and vapor molar volumes and can be used to obtain second virial coefficients of a wide variety of fluids including polar, associating and quantum gases. The calculated second virial coefficients are in good agreement with their counterparts from literature, which are obtained f...
Development of a Design Methodology Against Fast Cook-Off Threat for Insensitive Munitions
ŞAHİN, Hakan; NARİN, Bekir; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (Wiley, 2016-06-01)
This work provides a design methodology for a typical energetic system to get Type V insensitive munition (IM) response against fast cook-off threat. Experimental and numerical results for a generic test item filled with PBXN-109 explosive are presented. Two key aspects of IM design against fast cook-off threat are investigated, which are "time-to-reaction" and "critical ventilation area". By dividing the problem to pre-ignition and post-ignition, the complexity of the problem is reduced. The first part of ...
