The purpose of this study was to explore research assistants' opinions to improve science perception at graduate programs. The research questions include the research assistants' suggestions on the improvement of the graduate program regarding science perception and, in this respect, what their suggestions about a possible course. The sample for the present study contains 12 interviewees from four different institutes of Middle East Technical University. The interviewees are all PhD candidates at METU. The results were considered under the title of suggestions which could be realized by university administration. In addition, the possible course was handled by its content, method, and evaluation. In conclusion, based on literature review and the research assistants' views, the History of Science (HOS) and Philosophy of Science (POS) course was suggested as a possible course for improvement of science perception by utilizing explicitly-reflective inquiry approach. Further, they suggested that this course should be included curriculum of graduate programs. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The Effect of history of science instruction on elementary students' scientific literacy
Cansız, Mustafa; Sungur Vural, Semra; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Elementary Education (2014)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of history of science instruction on elementary students' scientific literacy. Specifically, the effectiveness of history of science instruction over curriculum-oriented instruction was examined in terms of four central components of scientific literacy, which are science process skills, understanding of human circulatory system concepts, attitudes toward science, and nature of science views. A total of 95 sixth-grade students from four classes p...
Modeling of the factors affecting science achievement of eighth grade Turkish students based on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study - Repeat (TIMSS - R) data
Özdemir, Ertuğrul; Berberoğlu, Halil Giray; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2003)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that are related to students̕ science achievement in TIMSS-R. Basically instructional activities, affective characteristics of students and socioeconomic status (SES) were taken as the variables of the model proposed within the Linear Structural Modeling (LSM) framework. This study examined the TIMSS data for Turkish students with the sample size of 7841 through the analysis of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Resulting path diagram showed that the ...
Exploring the Effects of Science Writing Heuristic Approach on 8th Grade Students Metacognition
Tucel, Tuğçe; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Öztekin, Ceren (2015-09-04)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach on middle school students' metacognition. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental research design, the non-equivalent control group post-test only design was used with the aim to compare the experimental and the comparison groups mean difference with respect to dependent variables. 60 eight grade students with a mean age of 14 years in two classes selected from one public school in an urban area. One class was ra...
