The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that are related to students̕ science achievement in TIMSS-R. Basically instructional activities, affective characteristics of students and socioeconomic status (SES) were taken as the variables of the model proposed within the Linear Structural Modeling (LSM) framework. This study examined the TIMSS data for Turkish students with the sample size of 7841 through the analysis of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Resulting path diagram showed that the largest relationship existed between science achievement and SES of students. It was also observed that students̕ enjoyment of science did not seem to have a significant contribution on science achievement. In addition, science achievement had a negative relationship with the classroom activities considered as student-centered. On the other hand, the activities considered as teacher-centered had a positive impact on the science achievement scores of the TIMSS tests. It was also observed that science achievement and perception of success/failure in science were highly related with each other. The results were interpreted within the framework of Turkish educational system, and some suggestions for future research studies were proposed.

Investigation of the relationship between pre-service science teachers' understandings of nature of science and their personal characteristics
Çetinkaya, Gamze; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationships between pre-service science teachers' understanding of nature of science (NOS) and their personal characteristics; understanding of nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI), epistemological world views, self-efficacy beliefs regarding science teaching, attitudes towards science teaching, metacognitive awareness level and faith/worldview schemas. The sample of the present study were 60 PSTs that are 3rd year students at elementary science edu...
An Investigation of the Relationship between Motivation and Academic Achievement of Pre-service Chemistry Teachers
Eymur, Guluzar; Geban, Ömer (2011-07-01)
The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between academic achievement and motivation. In addition, motivational differences between gender and year level were investigated. Pre-service chemistry teachers (n=168) completed the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) which was prepared by Vallerend (1992) as an intrument. The AMS consisted of 28 Likert-type scale questions related to intrinsic motivation (to know, toward accomplishment, and to experience stimulation), extrinsic motivation (ident...
The Relationship between physical activity level and academic achievement in high school students
Doğan, Uğur; Koçak, Mehmet Settar; Department of Physical Education and Sports (2016)
The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical activity level and academic achievement in high school students. This study is limited with grade 9-12 high school students in Kastamonu. There are 16 high schools and 8244 students in Kastamonu. The schools have divided into four randomly. Four of them have chosen for grade 9, four of them have chosen for grade 10, four of them have chosen for grade 11 and four of them have chosen for grades 12. Two classes were chosen randomly...
The role of perceived classroom goal structures, self-efficacy, and engagement in student science achievement
Ucar, F. Melike; Sungur, Semra (2017-06-01)
Background: Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the factors related to science achievement. In these studies, the classroom goal structure perceptions, engagement, and self-efficacy of the students have emerged as important factors to be examined in relation to students' science achievement.Purpose: This study examines the relationships between classroom goal structure perception variables (motivating tasks, autonomy support, and mastery evaluation), engagement (behavioral, emotional, cognit...
The effects of constructive learning method on students' academic achievement, retention of knowledge, gender and attitudes towards science course in "matter of structure and characteristics" unit
Boğar, Yurdagül; KALENDER, SUNA; SARIKAYA, MUSTAFA (2012-02-05)
The purpose of this research is to examine on students' academic achievement, retention of knowledge and attitudes towards science course in matter of structural and characteristic subject with constructivist education version. This study was conducted with students 7/A (N=34) and 7/B (N=34) located in Ankara, during the spring period of 2008-2009 academic year. The study used a quasi-experimental research design with pre-test and post-test control group was used in this study. According to this research mo...
