The polarization of a quantum electron confined in a one-dimensional potential well in the presence of a uniform electric field is calculated numerically. We find that the negative polarization of the first excited state in previous calculations is solely due to the neglect of the electric field outside the quantum well.

ELECTRON POLARIZATION IN A PARABOLIC QUANTUM-WELL WITH UNIFORM ELECTRIC-FIELD
ILAIWI, KF; Tomak, Mehmet (1991-01-01)
The polarization of a quantum electron confined in a parabolic quantum well in the presence of a uniform electric field is calculated numerically. We find positive polarization for both ground and the first excited states.
ELECTRON POLARIZATION IN QUANTUM-WELLS WITH UNIFORM ELECTRIC-FIELD
ILAIWI, KF; Tomak, Mehmet (Wiley, 1991-08-01)
The polarization of a quantum electron confined in square, parabolic, and triangular quantum wells is calculated numerically. The aim of the present calculations is to compare the results for various geometries.
Vacuum decay and the transmission resonances in space-dependent electric fields
Dumlu, Cesim K. (2014-03-11)
We investigate the decay of a quantum electrodynamical (QED) vacuum in arbitrary space-dependent electric fields. In particular, we analyze the resonance peaks of the positron emission spectrum for the external fields with subcycle structure. For this, we study the transmission probability in the framework of the scattering approach to vacuum pair production. In an under-the-barrier scattering regime, we show that the width of a transmission resonance can be enhanced when the effective scattering potential ...
Electronic properties of a large quantum dot at a finite temperature
Gulveren, B; Atav, U; Tomak, Mehmet (Elsevier BV, 2005-09-01)
The physical properties of a two-dimensional parabolic quantum dot composed of large number of interacting electrons are numerically determined by the Thomas Fermi (TF) method at a finite temperature. Analytical solutions are given for zero temperature for comparative purposes. The exact solution of the TF equation is obtained for the non-interacting system at finite temperatures. The effect of the number of particles and temperature on the properties are investigated both for interacting and non-interactin...
Optical absorption of a quantum well with an adjustable asymmetry
Yildirim, H.; Tomak, Mehmet (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2006-04-01)
The effects of asymmetry and the electric field on the electronic subbands and the nonlinear intersubband optical absorption of GaAs quantum wells represented by a Poschl-Teller confining potential are studied. The potential itself can be made asymmetric through a correct choice of its parameter set and this adjustable asymmetry is important for optimizing the absorption. In that way optimal cases can be created. We calculate the modified wave functions and electronic subbands variationally. The linear and ...
