Zinc borate was synthesized from the reaction of zinc oxide and boric acid in the absence or presence of seven different water soluble additives. Additive concentration and zinc oxide particle size were varied to investigate their effect on the growth kinetics of zinc borate particles. Zinc borate particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Samples taken from the reaction mixture during the synthesis were analyzed for determining the concentration of zinc oxide, boron oxide, and zinc borate. The results reveal the formation of zinc borate with the molecular formula 2ZnO center dot 3B(2)O(3)center dot 3H(2)O in the form of irregular platelets. The product retains its hydrate up to 300 degrees C. The reaction rate was found to increase when additives or nanosize zinc oxide were used. However, a lag time is observed in the presence of additives while the reaction completion time remains unaffected. The experimental kinetics data were fit to the logistic model. The variation of the model parameters with experimental conditions was also investigated. The results reveal that the specific reaction rate increases with the increasing concentration of additives and the decreasing size of zinc oxide particles.

Synthesis and characterization of conducting copolymers of succinic acid bis-(4-pyrrol-1-yl-phenyl) ester and their electrochromic properties
Ertas, M; Çırpan, Ali; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2004-05-07)
A new dipyrrolyl monomer was synthesized via the reaction between 4-pyrrol-1-yl phenol and butanedioyl dichloride. Electrochemical behavior of this monomer, succinic acid bis-(4-pyrrol-1-yl-phenyl) ester (SM) was studied. Homopolymerization was achieved by chemical and constant Current electrolysis methods. Copolymerization of SM with thiophene was performed by constant potential electrolysis in acetonitrile (AN)-tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBAFB) and dichloromethane (DCM)-TBAFB, solvent-electroly...
Synthesis, characterization, and electrochromic properties of conducting poly(hexanedioic acid bis-(2-thiophen-3-yl-ethyl ester) and its copolymer with thiophene
CAMURLU, P; Çırpan, Ali; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2004-10-14)
Hexanedioic acid bis-(2-thiophen-3-yl-ethyl) ester (HABTE) was synthesized via the reaction of 3-thiophene ethanol with adipoyl chloride. Resulting monomer was electrochemically homopolymerized in the presence of tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate as the supporting electrolyte, in acetonitrile/borontrifloride ethylether solvent mixture (8:2, v/v). Copolymerization in the presence of thiophene was achieved in TBAFB/AN. Resulting homo and copolymers were characterized via CV, FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, and UV-vis...
Synthesis and characterization of ruthenium(0) metal nanoparticles as catalyst in the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride
Zahmakıran, Mehmet; Özkar, Saim; Department of Chemistry (2005)
Sodium borohydride is stable in alkaline solution, however, it hydrolyses and generates hydrogen gas in the presence of suitable catalyst. By this way hydrogen can be generated safely for the fuel cells. All of the catalyst having been used in the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride, with one exception, are heterogeneous. The limited surface area of the heterogeneous and therefore, have limited activity because of the surface area. Thus, the use of metal nanoclusters as catalyst with large surface area is expe...
Gypsum crystal size distribution in four continuous flow stirred slurry boric acid reactors in series compared with the batch
Cakal, GO; Eroglu, I; Özkar, Saim (Elsevier BV, 2006-04-15)
Colemanite, one of the important boron minerals, is dissolved in aqueous sulfuric acid to produce boric acid. In this reaction, gypsum is obtained as a by-product. Gypsum crystals are in the shape of thin needles. These crystals should be grown to an easily filterable size in order to increase the production yield and purity of boric acid. In this paper, the particle size distributions and the volume-weighted mean diameters of the gypsum crystals obtained in batch and continuous flow systems were compared. ...
Synthesis of conducting polysiloxane-polypyrrole graft copolymers
Gunaydin, O; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Yagci, Y; Harabagiu, V; Pintela, M; Simionescu, BC (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2002-02-01)
Polysiloxane-polypyrrole graft copolymers have been synthesized by a series of chemical reactions and subsequent electropolymerization. First, the hydrosilation of 4-vinyl aniline by dimethyl-methylhydrosiloxane copolymer gave the corresponding aminophenyl functional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-NH2). The side chain pyrrole functionalized. polysiloxanes were then prepared by the reaction of PDMS-NH2 with glycidylpyrrole. Finally, the synthesis of graft copolymers of polysiloxane and pyrrole has been achieved ...
